Weekend roundup – 18th/19th July

The 1s travelled over the bridge to take on Falkland at Scroggie Park.  Batting first a flurry of early wickets reduced the Arrows to 35 for 5 but Arun Pillai (sponsored by Umair Mohammed Cosmetic & Sports Dentistry) and James Stronach steadied the ship.  They took the score to 81 before Stronach fell for 21.  Shovik Chakraborty joined Pillai at the crease and added another 37 runs for the 7th wicket but both batters fell in quick succession to leave Carlton 120 for 8, Pillai finishing with a vital 57.  The Arrows tail wagged and added 49 valuable runs with Jamie Beattie the last man out for 28 as the visitors were bowled out for 167 in the 47th over.  With the ball Olly Davidson (sponsored by Haldi) removed both openers and Conor Regan picked up the No 3 to make it 21 for 3.  Chakraborty then chipped in with 3 quick wickets to reduce Falkland to 69 for 6 before Beattie got in on the act to make it 73 for 7.  The home tail offered some resistance but that was eventually broken by Pillai before Davidson came back and got a 3rd and Rudy Adair completed the job, bowling Falkand out for 132 to give the Arrows a 37 run win.

The 2s were hosting their counterparts from Heriot’s at Grange Loan.  Batting first the Arrows got off to a good start thanks to Oli Stones (50) and Shreyas Tekale (28).  A mini-collapse left them in a spot of bother at 126 for 5 but Barry Vosloo and Fergus Foley consolidated and started to take the game to the opposition.  When Vosloo went for 39 the score had moved on to 195 for 6 and Rory Ledingham joined Foley in the middle.  The scoring rate accelerated as the pair put on 147 for the 7th wicket including Foley bringing up his first century for the Arrows in the 47th over.  The home side finished their 50 overs on 363 for 7 with Ledingham hitting 78* off just 52 balls.  The visitors got off to a fast start but Felix Lisher picked up the 1st wicket in the 5th over with 27 on the board.  The young quick continued to run through the top order and completed his 5-fer in the 11th over to reduce Heriot’s to 72 for 5.  Tekale then entered the attack and claimed the last 5 wickets to bowl out Heriot’s for 84 in the 16th over for a convincing 279 run win for the Arrows.

The 3s hosted table topping Edinburgh South 2s at Peffermill.  Bowling first there was an early strike for Dougie Firth and then Elliot Peltenburg removed the other opener to make it 64 for 2 in the 13th over.  Skipper Cam Moore turned to spin just before drinks and John Gill struck to make to 93 for 3.  Finlay Thompson then picked up a wicket with the first ball after drinks and then Gill claimed another to make it 95 for 5.  Thompson then got a 2nd with 116 on the board but South dug in and added 20 runs before Thompson got his 3rd.  The young left armer completed his 5-fer shortly after and Taha Khan came back to claim the final wicket as South were bowled out for 150 in the 34th over.  Unfortunately the batting innings never really got going as only Moore (15) made it into double figures.  In the end the Arrows were bowled out for a disappointing 61 in the 26th over to lose by 89 runs.

The 4s hosted Watsonian 3s at Auldcathie Park in Winchburgh as no Edinburgh grounds were available.  Skipper Al Murray won the toss and chose to bat first but things didn’t go according to plan.  Both openers fell cheaply and although there was dogged resistance from Sid Narayanaswamy, Samantha Evans & Harley Durnin-Cox the Arrows were reduced to 36 for 5 just before drinks.  Scoring remained difficult in the face of some tight Watsonian bowling and when Stu Dawson fell to make it 45 for 6 things looked bleak.  Aaradhy Khadse and Chris Sale dug in and added 35 for the 7th wicket before the youngster eventually fell for 11.  Sale found decent support from the tail and finished 31* as the Arrows ended on 103 for 9 from their 40 overs.  Kartic Subr picked up 2 early wickets to give the home side some hope and when he then claimed 2 more in the 8th over to make it 52 for 4 an unlikely win looked possible.  Despite Khadse picking up a well deserved wicket Watsonians cantered over the line in the 17th over as the 4s lost by 5 wickets.

The final game on Saturday saw the 5s travel to Leith Links2 to take on Leith FAB 4s.  Batting first the Arrows lost Sam Gilmour early but Martin Robertson and Vijay Raghavan took the score to 74 before Raghavan was caught for 26.  Ishan Samanta didn’t last long and when Robertson nicked off for 61 the visitors were 115 for 4.  Although none of the other batters made a significant contribution Dilan Amin (14) provided a useful cameo as the Arrows were bowled out for 167 in the 31st over.  In reply there were early strikes for George Barry & Rohan Kumar Jena to leave Leith 18 for 2.  A smart bit of fielding from Arjun Shelke caused a run out to make it 38 for 3 and then Barry claimed another to reduce the home side to 46 for 4.  Another sharp bit of work in the field made it 47 for 5 but Leith continued to score freely.  Tom Sweet then struck twice before drinks to leave Leith 92 for 7 at the halfway stage.  Amin came on a claimed the 8th wicket but a good 9th wicket partnership was forming.  Barry came back into the attack and picked up the last 2 wickets as the Arrows bowled Leith out for 138 in the 28th over to win by 29 runs.

On Sunday there was an early start at Grange Loan as the Girls U14 took on Grange in the U14 Cup semi-final.  In the Pairs Cricket format Grange scored 265-10 (in other words, they scored 105 runs, but lost 10 wickets). Wickets were very evenly shared – Coco Nixon, Emily Jobson, Eva Vaughan Shaw & Shobha Kallamadi took 2 each, Aggie Foley & Lindsay Thompson 1 each. Carlton replied with 340-1 (ie scored 145 and lost just one wicket). Pick of the batting was a captain’s innings of 21* from Foley. Krithi Subr (17*) & Jobson (15*) also contributed well.  They now join the Girls U16s in cup final day at Strathallan School on 22 August.

Later that afternoon the Women’s 1s took on West of Scotland at Grange Loan.  Choosing to bat first the Arrows lost Sarah Beith with 26 on the board.  The score moved on to 54 when Sophie Thomas was the next batter out and Samantha Evans joined Ikra Farooq at the crease.  The pair took full advantage of the lightning fast outfield and took the score to 211 before Farooq was forced to retire for 67.  Wickets started to fall as the batters pushed on but Evans brought up her century in the 33rd over.  The captain finished the innings unbeaten on 144 as the Arrows posted 353 for 7 from their 40 overs.  In reply Kiera Ansell took the 1st wicket in the 4th over before nicking off the other opener in the 8th over to make it 52 for 2.  Ansell claimed a 3rd before Aggie Foley picked up 2 wickets to leave West in trouble at 104 for 5.  Varsha Suresh then got in on the act before Foley took 2 more to reduce the visitors to 121 for 8.  Farooq then came on and bowled the West number 10 before Sonia Amin completed proceedings bowling the visitors out for 142 in the 28th over for an impressive 211 run win.

The final game of the weekend saw the Women’s 2s travel to Scroggie Park to take on Lomond Lynx.  Bowling first Elsie Fraser struck in her 1st over and then a run out in the 3rd reduced the home side to 5 for 2.  Worse was to come in the 4th over as Lindsay Thompson took 2 in 2.  Another run out left the Fife side 11 for 5 before Kriti Subr struck to make it 14 for 6 after 7 overs.  That became 14 for 7 as Mathilda Ellis took a wicket in the next over.  The home side dug in and the score moved on to 55 for 7 before Ellis claimed a 2nd.  Ajitha Rajan took the final wicket in the 22nd over to bowl the home side out for 56.  In reply both openers were run out to leave the Arrows 5 for 2 but Fraser and captain Amelia Beattie steadied the ship and got the Arrows in sight of victory before both fell.  There were no further alarms and the Arrows got over the line in the 17th over to win by 6 wickets.
