Weekend roundup – 29th/30th August
The 1s wrapped up their league season with a trip to Lochlands to take on Arbroath United. Skipper Daniel Da Costa won the toss and chose to bowl first. The Arbroath openers made a watchful start before Arun Pillai (sponsored by Umair Mohammed Cosmetic & Sports Dentistry) made the breakthrough in the 14th over with 32 on the board. Shovik Chakraborty then struck in the 17th over to make it 43 for 2 and then on the stroke of drinks Tom Hathorn got his first 1st team wicket to reduce the home side to 72 for 3. Conor Regan claimed a wicket the next over and then Pillai came back on to pick up his 2nd and leave Arbroath in trouble at 107 for 5 in the 30th over. The home side recovered and took the score to 214 in the next 15 overs before Pillai claimed 3 wickets in an over stop Arbroath in their tracks. Jamie Beattie then struck in the 47th and Pillai claimed his 6th wicket to bowl the home side out for 224 in the 48th over. In reply Angus Guy, playing his last game for Carlton before heading south with work, was going well and although Oli Stones & Hathorn fell cheaply the score had moved on to 77 for 2 when Da Costa made his way to the middle. The runs kept flowing and Guy & Da Costa both brought up their half centuries as the Arrows took the score to 170 before Guy nicked off for 79. Da Costa went shortly after for 56 and although 2 more wickets fell James Stronach (24*) and Shreyas Tekale saw the Arrows home for a 4 wicket win in the 48th over.
Earlier in the day at Grange Loan there was a intra-club T10 tournament to warm up for the club dinner in the evening. 3 teams competed in a round robin tournament with the result coming down to the final ball of the final game. A scrambled 3 led to a tie and the match had to be settled by a “Golden Ball” (h/t ECN). While it took longer for match manager Gav Murray to explain how it worked to players & supporters than it did for the action to take place, Anish Amin’s team failed to score the 2 or more required to win off the single delivery leaving the honours to go to the team led by Max D’Ulisse.
On Sunday the heavy overnight rain and continued damp conditions led to the cancellation of both the MCC match at Grange Loan and the Women’s 1s final WPL 40 league game away at Barnton. There was however time for Fraser Reynolds from Cricket Scotland to pop into Grange Loan to present the WPL 40 trophy to Samantha Evans and the weather relented to allow the league winning side to assemble for a photo with Arthurs Seat just about visible in the background.
