Weekend roundup – 9th/10th May
The 1s made the short journey to Inch Park to take on Edinburgh South in round 2 of the EPL. After being asked to bat first the Arrows made a good start thanks to Oli Stones (47); Chris McBride (50) and Daniel Da Costa (54) but wickets kept falling and the visitors were bowled out in the 41st over for 223. In reply South started well but 2 wickets for Conor Regan and 1 for McBride pegged them back. A McBride runout and wickets for Shovik Chakroaborty (2) and Shreyas Tekale (1) kept the home side under the pump before Rudy Adair came back and picked up the final 3 wickets to see the Arrows to a 44 run win.
Back at Grange Loan the 2s were taking on Drummond Trinity in the ESCA Championship. Losing another toss, the home side were inserted and were in a spot of bother at 61 for 3. Skipper Gav Murray and 2s debutant Tom Hathorn steadied the ship and took the score to 112 for 3 at drinks. Although Hathorn fell shortly after Murray kept going and got good support from the middle order. Brining up his century in the 43rd over Murray eventually fell for 131 in the final over as the Arrows finished on 270 for 6. Charles Stronach picked up a wicket in the first over but the visitors took the attack to the bowlers. Dougie Firth then picked up 2 wickets to wrest control back to the home side as the run rate started to climb. More wickets fell as the pressure told on the visitors and they were eventually bowled out for 200 in the 41st over to give the 2s back to back wins.
The 3s game against Linlithgow was cancelled by Peffermill after heavy overnight rain.
On Sunday the 1s were in Scottish Cup action, away at holders Clydesdale. The home side chose to bat first and 3 early strikes from Rudy Adair had them in trouble at 36 for 3. More wickets followed from Chris McBride, Conor Regan, Shovik Chakraborty and Shiv Jhala to put the Arrows in a great position at 114 for 7 but a late fightback from ‘Dale saw them get to a total of 215 from their 50 overs with Arun Pillai picking up 2 more wickets. The reply got off to a terrible start as Carlton were reduced to 11 for 4. Daniel Da Costa & James Stronach stabilised things somewhat but both fell with the score on 70. More wickets fell and the visitors looked to be dead and buried at 113 for 9 but Jhala and Regan didn’t give up. There was to be no fairy tale ending as eventually Jhala holed out for 37 and Carlton were bowled out 58 runs short to end this year’s Scottish Cup campaign.
After a washout last weekend the Women’s 1s got their WPL 40 season off and running with a trip to Arboretum to play Stew Mel. Samantha Evans won the toss and elected to bowl first. The Arrows picked up wickets at regular intervals and bowled out the home side in the 38th over for 149. Kiera Ansell took 3 wickets and there were 2 each for Charis Scott; Agnes Foley & Flora Corbin with Elsie Fraser the other successful bowler. In reply, both openers fell cheaply but Scott and Evans took the score to 100 before Evans was bowled for 34. Annette Aitken-Drummond joined Scott at the crease and the pair saw Carlton safely over the line with more than 10 overs to spare with Scott finishing on 40*.
The Women’s 2s were also in action at Newfield where they hosted Heriot’s in round 3 of the WPL 30. Batting first the Arrows made 150 for 3 with Ashley Robertson (36ret) and Ajitha Rajan (25) leading the way. An excellent performance in the field restricted Heriot’s to 95 for 9 from their 30 overs with wickets for Krithi Subr (2); Mirran Weir (2); Varsha Suresh; Evie Miller & Abby Caton as well as 2 runouts. That result makes it 2 wins out of 2 for the Women’s 2s and they remain unbeaten in the League.
The final game on Sunday saw the 4s take on Leith FAB 3s at Grange Loan in ESCA Division 5. Batting first skipper Al Murray & David Simpson put on 74 for the first wicket before Simpson was runout for 31. Alex Fedenczuk joined Murray and the pair added another 71 runs before Murray fell for 56. Feds went shortly after for 33 and the middle order added some good late runs to finish on 176 for 6 from their 40 overs. In reply Abhi Mehta removed both openers and Jake Heller also picked up a wicket to leave the visitors 61 for 3. Stu Dawson struck on the cusp of drinks before Ollie McCallum picked up 2 more wickets to leave Leith on the ropes at 89 for 6. New man Keiran Allan picked up wickets with his first 2 balls for Carlton and Aaradhy Khadse completed things with his own 2 in 2, with Nelson on the board, to bowl the visitors out for a 65 run win.
