Weekend roundup – 25th/26th July

The 1s hosted Heriot’s at Grange Loan and on winning the toss chose to bat first.  Angus Guy went early then the Arrows lost Shiv Jhala and Pete Gill cheaply to leave themselves in some trouble at 56 for 3.  Daniel Da Costa and Olly Davidson (sponsored by Haldi) recovered things and put on 77 runs for the 4th wicket before Da Costa was pinned in front for 61.  2 more quick wickets fell to leave the Arrows back under the cosh at 139 for 6.  Wickets continued to fall, including Davidson for 38, and at 184 for 9 things looked bleak.  Jamie Beattie (27*) added some very handy late order runs but the home side were bowled out for 220 in the 47th over.  There was an early strike for Beattie but the visitors piled on the runs.  Arun Pillai (sponsored by Umair Mohammed Cosmetic & Sports Dentistry) eventually made the breakthrough in the 24th over but the score had moved on to 158.  Pillai picked up another 2 balls later and then got a 3rd in the 26th over but there was to be no more success for the Carlton bowlers as Heriot’s coasted to a 6 wicket win in the 32nd over.

The 2s travelled to Fife to take on Dunnikier in the ESCA Championship.  Batting first the Arrows got off to a fast start before Shreyas Tekale went for 34 with 64 on the board.  Oli Stones brought up another half century before holing out for 52 and there were 2 more cheap wickets which reduced the Arrows to 160 for 4.  Stevie Gilmour and Tom Hathorn then formed a solid 5th wicket partnership which took the score to 208  before Gilmour went for a patient 67.  Rory Ledingham entered the fray and with Hathorn accelerated the scoring rate.  Hathorn brought up his first 50 for the 2s as the Arrows finished on 300 for 5 with Hathorn 55* and Ledingham 45* off just 22 balls.   Charles Stronach picked up an early wicket but the home side were keeping in touch with the required rate.  Hamish Foley then claimed 2 wickets to make it 108 for 3 in the 22nd over.  Ledingham then picked up the 4th wicket in the next over to put more pressure on Dunnikier and the scoring rate slowed further.  Max D’Ulisse took 3 more wickets and with the home side shorthanded by this stage Hathorn claimed the final wicket in the 48th over to bowl Dunnikier out for 210 for a 90 run victory.

The 3s were also on the road travelling to North Berwick to take on Bass Rock at Recreation Park.  Choosing to bat first the Arrows lost openers Anish Amin (16) and Euan Keatinge (19) and then Pavan Yaradi went for 28 to leave Carlton 88 for 3 just before drinks. Robbie Murray (56) and Cam Moore (35) upped the scoring rate although both fell in quick succession to make it 161 for 5.  Aadi Khadse kept the scoreboard moving but wickets continued to fall.  In the end the Arrows finished on 249 for 8 with Khadse 50 not out.  Khadse removed both openers but not before they had added 52 runs.  Atreya Subr picked up the 3rd wicket just after drinks with the score on 99 and the runs continued to flow.  John Gill did claim another wicket to make it 144 for 4 in the 28th over but the experienced home batters kept up with the rate.  Hard as they tried, the Arrows couldn’t find the breakthrough and Bass Rock got over the line in the penultimate over to consign the 3s to a 6 wicket loss.

The 4s travelled to the Borders to play St Boswells.  Having been inserted 2 quick wickets reduced the Arrows to 21 for 2.  David Simpson and Ishant Samanta steadied the ship and then took the attack to the home side.  At drinks the visitors were 77 for 2 and the batters looked to push on.  Simpson eventually fell for 38 and then the Arrows lost 3 wickets with the score on 139 including Samanta for 60.  A couple more wickets fell to leave the 4s 156 for 8 in the 34th over.  Aradhy Khadse (16*) and Stu Dawson (19*) saw the Arrows to a competitive looking 194 for 8 from their 40 overs.  Tomos Hunt and Kartic Subr claimed early strikes to reduce the home side to 26 for 2 and then Jake Heller produced a fantastic spell of 6 overs, 4 maidens, none for 6.  At drinks the home side were 74 for 2 but then Khadse and Harley Durnin-Cox struck to make it 77 for 4.  The home side counter-attacked and added 79 for the 5th wicket before Khadse made the breakthrough.  Hunt came back on and took wickets in successive overs including the set batter to leave the game wide open at 165 for 7 in the 34th over.  Hunt claimed 2 more to complete his 5-for and then Khadse picked up the final wicket in the penultimate over to give the Arrows a win by a margin of only 12 runs.

The final game on Saturday saw the 5s host Drummond Trinity 4s at Fettes 2.  The Arrows bowled first and George Barry claimed the first wicket with 46 on the board.  At drinks the visitors were 105 for 1 and Barry came back on and made the breakthrough.  The scoreboard kept moving before Euan Murray picked up a wicket to make it 150 for 3 in the 28th over. Sid Vishnu then struck in the 31st over before Murray claimed a 2nd the next over to make it 183 for 5.  Murray suffered a horrible finger injury and was replaced in the attack by Vijay Raghavan who caused a runout with his first delivery.  Vishnu claimed another and then there were 2 wickets for Sam Gilmour before Raghavan completed proceedings to bowl DTs out for 206.  The reply got off to a terrible start with both openers back in the sheds with only 4 on the board.  Raghavan and Dan Barry then added 163 for the 3rd wicket before Raghavan fell for 89.  Barry went soon after for 55 but Seb Gupta and Mike Kennedy took the score to 196 before Kennedy was bowled for 11.  Skipper Keith Murray made his way to the crease and watched as Gupta (17*) saw the Arrows over the line in the 36th over for a fine 5 wicket win.

On Sunday the Women were in action in the quarter final of the T20 Cup away to West of Scotland at Hamilton Crescent.  The home side chose to bat first and skipper Maisie Maceira struck in the 3rd over with 14 on the board.  Kiera Ansell then got herself a wicket the next over before Maceira claimed a 2nd to reduce West to 32 for 3.  Aggie Foley was introduced to the attack in the 7th over and struck immediately to make it 40 for 4.  Her second over yielded 2 more wickets including the dangerous West opener.  Foley then got a 4th to make it 66 for 7 after 11 before Ikra Farooq was thrown the ball and picked up the final 3 wickets to bowl West out for 72 in 12 overs.  Holly Sladen and Farooq put on 29 for the first wicket before Sladen went for 16.  Sophie Thomas went first ball and then Farooq was pinned in front to leave the Arrows 33 for 3.  That became 37 for 4 soon after but Maceira & Foley steadied the ship and got the Arrows in sight of victory before Foley was run out for 14.  Maceira ensured there were no more alarms and secured the win with 5 wickets in hand, finishing on 20*.

The final game of the weekend saw the U13s welcome their counterparts from Durham City to Grange Loan in the knock out stages of the ECB Vitality T20 Cup.  Overnight rain had left the ground extremely wet underfoot and despite more heavy showers the game eventually went ahead after a 90 minute delay thanks to efforts of players and parents to mop up the excess water.  The Arrows won the toss and chose to bat first.  Dilan Amin and Arjun Shelke got the home side off to a good start before Amin went for 12 to make it 28 for 1.  Shelke retired on 33* with the score on 60 and then captain Olly McCallum hit 30 off only 12 balls to ensure the Arrows would have a competitive total.  Tom Sweet (17) and Aaradhy Khadse (25) added some useful runs at the back end as the home side posted 155 for 7 from their 20 overs.  The visitors made a decent start with the bat but Sam Gilmour made the breakthrough to leave them 30 for 1 in the 7th over.  Shelke then came on and took 2 wickets and with at retiral made it 64 for 4.  4 wickets fell with the score on 84, 1 for McCallum, 2 for Khadse and Gilmour claimed a 2nd.  Shelke bowled the final over and picked up his 2nd as Durham City finished on 91 for 9 and the Arrows were safely through to the next round in Neston on August 5th.
