Sixes fun in the sun
Saturday saw the annual Carlton Sixes tournament take place in glorious sunshine at Grange Loan. Six teams drawn from across the club competed in fancy dress for the Martin Flynn trophy. The teams were Fraggle’s Rocks in their highland dress; Haggo’s Henchmen wearing 1990s neon; The Blushers who came dressed as the Universe Boss; Sibley’s Sixers in beachwear; The Maraculous Six came as Mexicans and Carlton Chancers were extremely dapper, but not entirely trustworthy.
The teams were split into two group and with the Chancers topping Group B with victories over the Blushers and Sibley’s Sixers. In Group A all three teams won a game so it came down to the fancy dress to decide who would progress to the final. The Maraculous Six edging it over Haggo’s Henchman and Fraggle’s Rocks.
In the 5th/6th playoff Fraggle’s Rocks took on the Blushers and the Higlanders prevailed. Haggo’s Henchmen then got the better of Sibley’s Sixers to claim 3rd place.
In the final Chancer’s skipper John Beattie chose to field first but a quick-fire 20 from Fraser Burnett and good late hitting from Rua McIntyre helped the Maraculous Six post 57 from their 5 overs. In the second half, tight bowling from Ben Stronach, Charlie Kentish & Zaara Dancu up top meant the Chancers were behind the required rate. Despite some lusty blows from Parker Neame they fell a few runs short and the Maraculous Six claimed the trophy.
A great way to end the season. Many thanks to all who helped organise, especially Colin & Alastair for providing such a good surface to play on and to Sandy Scotland and Allan Haggo for umpiring.
