Weekend roundup – 11th/12th June
The 1st XI travelled across the city to Goldenacre to take on Heriot’s. Skipper Tom Simpson lost the toss and the home side chose to bowl first. Wickets fell at regular intervals and nobody was able to impose themselves on the bowling. There were a few starts but no one was able to go on and make a telling contribution and Carlton were bowled out for 156 in the 44th over. Umair Mohammed top scored with 29. Heriots got off to a flyer and although Ally Evans struck in the 7th over the score had already passed 50. There was a run out from Shujaa Khan and Angus Beattie also claimed a wicket but Heriot’s cruised to the target in the 25th over for a 7 wicket win.
Back at Grange Loan the 2nd XI entertained Edinburgh Accies. Skipper Ben D’Ulisse lost the toss and Accies invited the home side to bat first. Openers Will Hardie and Gav Murray went in the 10th & 11th overs respectively but Kyle Macpherson and Hayden Laing put on 135 for the 3rd wicket. The partnership was broken when Laing was bowled for 72 but Macpherson kept going finding good support from first brother Ruari then Mo Nauman. Macpherson brought up his century with a 6 in the 49th over and was out in the final over for 109. The 2s finished on 293 for seven. In reply Charles Stronach took an early wicket followed by one for Omar Ahmad, courtesy of fine diving catch by Murray. Stronach claimed 2 more wickets to leave the visitors in trouble at 49 for 4. Saif Khan and Mark McKay took a wicket a piece in the 5th and 6th overs but the visitors chased down the target for no further loss in the 23rd over.
The 4th XI made the long journey down to St Boswells for their ESCA Div 4 clash. With a late start and weather about the skippers agreed a 30 over a side game. Al Murray lost the toss and the 4s were asked to bat first. The skipper went early but Bruce Smith (58) and Gregor McIntyre (33) set a decent platform. A flurry of wickets fell before Abhi Mehta (24) hit some useful late order runs as the 4s posted 143 for 8 from their allotted overs. Mehta struck in each of his first 3 overs to have the home side in trouble at 12 for 3, but they recovered well in tricky bowling & fielding conditions. Dougie Firth claimed the 4th wicket and Joe Ward the 5th but the home side got home with 2 overs and 5 wickets to spare.

On Sunday the Women took on Stewart’s Melville at Grange Loan. Skipper Annette Aitken-Drummond won the toss and inserted the visitors. Opening bowlers Gabriella Fontenla and Masie Maceira each claimed an early wicket and then Fontenla claimed a second. A good partnership was broken by Sam Haggo and Zaara Dancu also took a wicket. The U15s travelled to Stirling for finals day of the ECB U15 Cup. Playing Clydesdale in the semi-final in a rain affected match the young Carlton team restricted ‘Dale to 98 for 5 from their 18 overs but were unable to chase it down in the face of some accurate slow bowling. In the end they finished 81 for 9. In the 3rd/4th playoff they met Livingston and bounced back with a comfortable win.
