Weekend roundup – 10th/11th July

The 1st XI made the short journey across Edinburgh to take on Stewart’s Melville at Inverleith.  Skipper Ally Evans won the toss and invited the home side to bat first.  Carlton produced a strong bowling performance to reduce Stew Mel to 78 for 7.  There was some stubborn resistance from the lower order but the home side was eventually bowled out for 118 in the 49th over.  Umair Mohammed was with pick of the bowlers with 4 for 23 while Rua McIntyre and Angus Beattie each claimed 2 wickets and there was one each for Omar Ahmad & Rory Allardice.  Tom Simpson and Shujaa Khan opened up in the reply and put on 48 for this first wicket before Khan fell for 18.  Hugo Southwell could only add 16 and Fraser Burnett and Ali Shah fell cheaply so it was left to Mohammed (19*) and Simpson (40*) to see Carlton home by 5 wickets in the 22nd over.

Back at Grange Loan the 2nd XI took on local rivals Marchmont.  The visitors won the toss and chose to field first.  Murray Whitaker and Gav Murray put on 54 before the latter was out leg before for 11.  Hayden Laing joined Whitaker and took the score to 100 before he was bowled for 28.  Ben D’Ulisse and Whitaker put on 87 for the third wicket before the opener fell having just completed his century.  The visitors did well in the last 10 overs to restrict the 2s to 221 for 7 from their 50 overs with only Shiv Gupta (22*) making a useful contribution.  Gupta and Charles Stronach took the new ball and made early inroads into the visitor’s reply, picking up the top 3 for just 19 runs.  The rest of the Marchmont batting didn’t fare much better with Gupta finishing with 6 for 16 and Stronach 3 for 14 with the bowlers well backed up in the field with some excellent catching as the visitors were bowled out for 41 in the 22nd over.

The 3rd XI travelled to Fettes School to take on Grange 3s.  Brad McKay lost the toss and Grange opted to bat first.  Cam Keatinge struck early as a good all round bowling and fielding display saw the home side bowled out for 103 with the last ball of the innings.  Skipper McKay lead the way with 3 for 15 and young spinner Max D’Ulisse picked up 2 for 19.  Gav Rittoo and Amit also chipped in with wickets and there were run outs for D’Ulisse and Zaki Yusaf.  Openers Yusaf (37) and Ben Thurman (24) put on 58 for the first wicket but both fell in quick succession.  Wickets continued to fall but Paul Kentish (16*) made sure the visitors claimed the points as the 3s ran out comfortable winners with 14 overs and 5 wickets in hand.

The 4th XI were also in the north of Edinburgh, taking on Drummond Trinity 2s at Inverleith Park Arti.  Skipper Brian Kaczynski won the toss and asked the home side to bat first.  Ivan Dawson picked up both openers before the spin twins of Rory Ledingham and Joe Ward wreaked havoc through the home batting line up.  The 4s had DTs 69 for 9 at the end of the 21st over but the last wicket pair managed to survive a further 10 overs, adding 39 runs as the home side were bowled out for 108.  Ledingham finished with 5 for 41 and Ward claimed 3 for 13, but the 4s could have been chasing a much lower total if they had taken their chances and also not conceded 37 extras, including 31 wides.  The reply never really got going in the face of a strong DTs bowling attack.  Wickets fell regularly and the 4s were eventually bundled out for 60 in the 33rd over.

The 5th XI travelled across the bridge to take on Dunfermline & Carnegie 2s at McKane Park.  Keith Murray won the toss and chose to field first.  The home side got off to a decent start but the bowlers and fielders stuck to their task.  Zaara Dancu took 2 wickets and there were one apiece for Kyle Burgess; Robbie Murray and Stu Dawson with the latter also contributing a run out to see Dunfermline & Carnegie post 159 for 6 from their 40 overs.  In reply, Carlton lost Fergus Foley early on but skipper Murray (24) and Martin Robertson (32) laid a solid foundation.  Hannah Rainey chipped in with 17 but the home side held on to some difficult chances to keep them in the hunt.  Shuaib Farooq (23) and Dawson (13) were well placed to see the 5s home but both fell when the home side brought back their opening bowlers and Carlton ended up 24 runs short in the 35th over.

On Sunday the Mixed Development XI were due to play at Melrose but unfortunately the Borderers were unable to raise a side.  Edinburgh South were able to step into the breach, albeit with a couple of guests in sky blue caps, and a 30 overs a side game was played at Grange Loan.
