Weekend roundup – 27th/28th June
The 1s welcomed Arbroath to Grange Loan and skipper Daniel Da Costa won the toss and inserted the visitors. Olly Davidson (sponsored by Haldi) struck with the second ball of the match and there were wickets for Conor Regan (2) and Ben Stronach to reduce Arbroath to 45 for 4 in the 12th over. The visitors dug in and put on 93 for the 5th wicket before Rudy Adair made the breakthrough. Adair claimed a second and the Arun Pillai (sponsored by Umair Mohammed Cosmetic & Sports Dentistry) took 2 more to leave Arboath 180 for 8. Stronach came back and struck immediately and Pillai claimed the final wicket to bowl out the visitors for 206. In reply Angus Guy fell early and fellow opener Pete Gill was pinned in front in the 8th over the Arrows were 58 for 2. The scoreboard was rattling along but so too were the wickets. Da Costa went for 25 and when Chris McBride fell for 57 the score was 124 for 4 in the 17th over. Davidson was still at the crease but began to run out of partners as wickets kept falling. When he was out for 33 the writing was on the wall and the Arrows were bowled out for 178 in the 36th over to lose by 28 runs.
The 2s travelled to Melrose to take on Morton and Gav Murray failed to call correctly and the Arrows were asked to bat first. Things got off to a disastrous start as the 2s slumped to 12 for 4. Barry Vosloo & Charlie Kentish recovered things somewhat before Kentish went for 24 with the score on 52. Rory Ledingham then came in and he and Vosloo added 78 for the 6th wicket before Ledingham was bowled for 35. Vosloo fell shortly after for a battling 45 and in the end the Arrows were bowled out for 153 in the 37th over. A poor start with the ball let Morton off to a fast start before Ledingham took the first wicket with 46 on the board. Charles Stronach then took 2 and another for Ledingham gave the visitors hope at 73 for 4 and then Aadi Khadse struck to make it 93 for 5. The home side recovered before the 6th wicket partnership was eventually broken by Max D’Ulisse and although there were more wickets for Oli Stones and D’Ulisse, Morton got over the line in the 37th over to win by 2 wickets.
The 4s were away to Stew Mel 3s on the artificial at Inverleith and bowled first on the fast scoring surface. Jake Heller struck early but the Arrows had to wait until the 20th over for the next wicket, courtesy of Kyle Burgess. Having done well to restrict the home side to 90 runs in the first half, Stew Mel began to accelerate. Harley Cox was the next to strike but the score had moved onto 166. Raghuram Parasur then picked up a wicket and Taha Khan also struck and some good fielding in the deep from Heller lead to a run out as the home side finished on 207 for 6 from their 40 overs. In reply skipper Al Murray fell cheaply but Basil Khan and David Simpson took the score to 49 before the latter was bounced out. Khan fell shortly after for 38 and the Arrows also lost Parasur just before drinks with 76 on the board. Ishan Samanta (21) hit some nice shots and Aaradhy Khadse (13) and Taha Khan (15*) dug in to ensure maximum batting points but the Arrows were bowled out in the penultimate over for 150 to lose by 57 runs.
The final game on Saturday saw the 5s host Stew Mel 4s at Peffermill. Bowling first the Arrows did exceptionally well to bowl out the visitors for 112 in the 39th over. George Barry was the most successful bowler picking up 3 for 19 but young Sid Vishnu also impressed on league debut with 2 for 11 off 5 overs. Sam Gilmour also picked up 2 wickets with one each for Rohan Jena and Rahul Khadse as well as a textbook direct hit run out from skipper Euan Murray. In reply, both openers fell early and when Vijay Raghavan departed in the 11th over to make it 28 for 3 the Arrows looked up against it. Dan Barry came to the fore, however, and found good support from the middle order. Although 3 more wickets went down, Barry kept the scoreboard moving and steered the Arrows to a 4 wicket victory in the 32nd over with an unbeaten 53.
On Sunday the Women’s 2s were in Challenger Cup action against West of Scotland in an early morning T20 at Grange Loan. Sarah Beith won the toss and chose to bat first with Sonia Amin (30ret) and Agnes Foley (28) setting a great platform at the top of the order. A fine cameo from Sarah Law (28) helped propel the Arrows to 149 for 5 from their 20 overs. The West reply got off to a poor start with Kiera Ansell picking up a wicket in the first over. A run out in the second over added to their woes before Ansell struck again to make it 8 for 3. Elsie Fraser then claimed 3 wickets in the 4th over leave the visitors 9 for 6. Lindsay Thompson then picked up 2 wickets in the 5th over to bowl West out for 11 and secure the Arrows passage through to the next round.
The final game of the weekend saw the 3s host Edinburgh CC 2s at Grange Loan. The visitors chose to bat first and got off to a decent start before Hector Murray struck to make it 40 for 1 in the 9th over. Runs continued to flow before John Gill picked up a wicket in the 19th over with 93 on the board. Another strong partnership for the visitors formed which was eventually broken by Brad McKay but the score had moved on to 177. McKay claimed another and Murray got a well deserved second but Edinburgh CC finished on 243 for 5 from their 40 overs. A good start from Anish Amin and Euan Keatinge put on 93 for the first wicket before Amin fell for 46. Keatinge was next to go for 45 with 111 on the board and Robbie Murray also fell victim to Nelson. The Arrows were unable to match the visitors second half acceleration and although there was a quick fire 24* from Finlay Thompson the Arrows finished on 194 for 9 to lose by 49 runs.
