Weekend roundup – 23rd/24th May
The 1s travelled to Goldenacre to take on Heriot’s in round 4 of the EPL. Electing to bat first 2 wickets went down early but Ruari Macpherson (sponsored by Ace Club Golf) was going well. He fell for 39 and although Olly Davidson (sponsored by Haldi) & Shovik Chakraborty also got into the 30s no one could go on and make a significant impression on the scoreboard. In the end the Arrows were bowled out for 190 in the 47th over. Early wickets would be needed to have any chance of defending that total but the home side got off to a fast start. Davidson eventually made the breakthrough and then got a second to make it 136 for 2 but the damage was already done. Shiv Jhala picked up 2 late wickets but Heriot’s cantered home for a 6 wicket win in the 25th over.
The 2s entertained Dunnikier at Grange Loan and the visitors chose to bat first. The Arrows looked well placed reducing the Fifers to 54 for 4 but a strong rearguard action saw the visitors accelerate late in the innings. They were eventually bowled out for 271 in the final over with 3 wickets each for Charles & Ben Stronach, 2 for Rory Ledingham and 1 each for Shreyas Tekale & Max D’Ulisse. In reply Barry Vosloo fell early and then Will Hardie went to make it 51 for 2. Stevie Gilmour & Pete Gill added 117 for the 3rd wicket before Gilmour was bowled for 68. Gill kept going and found good support from Ben D’Ulisse (24) and Ledingham added a quick fire 19. With 2 overs left 16 runs were still needed and Tekale was in at number 9 with Gill on strike on 97. After a single to Gill and then a wide, Tekale went across his stumps and flicked the ball to the leg side fence for 6. He followed that with a 4 and a single to get Gill back on strike and he brought up his century to level the scores. A legside wide completed the victory for the Arrows as they won another nailbiter by 3 wickets.
The 3s were at home at Merchiston Castle to take on Bass Rock in ESCA Division 2. The visitors batted first and although Lewis Broster got an early breakthrough the North Berwick side kept the scoreboard ticking over. Skipper Brad McKay removed the other opener and there were further wickets for John Gill, Elliot Peltenburg & Tom Hathron (2) but Bass Rock posted a healthy looking 217 for 6 from their 40 overs. In reply early wickets fell but Hathorn and Cam Moore recovered things to some extent. When Hathorn fell for 37 there was still 88 runs needed and although Moore found some support from the lower order the rate began to climb. Moore was caught for 86 in the final over and the Arrows finished an agonising 2 runs short.
The 4s welcomed St Boswells to Peffermill and the visitors won the toss and elected to field. David Simpson fell early but Al Murray & Anish Amin consolidated before skipper Murray fell in the 17th over with 62 on the board. Vijay Raghavan joined Amin and after a watchful start began to open up along with Amin. Raghavan fell for 28 but the score had moved on to 136. Amin kept going and brought up his century in the 33rd over. Big shots kept coming from Amin and he eventually holed out in the final over for 155 as the Arrows posted 247 for 6 from their 40 overs. Tight bowling early on from Atreya Subr & Taha Khan yielded rewards as the Borderers were reduced to 13 for 3 in the 7th over. Abhi Mehta then picked up 2 wickets and Aaradhy Khadse got 3 with the returning Subr claiming a 3rd the visitors ended on 90 for 9 to give the Arrows a 157 run win.
The 5s were at Inverleith Park Artificial to take on Drummond Trinity 4s. Bowling first the Arrows had DTs on the ropes at 58 for 5 thanks to wickets from Tom Sweet, Rohan Kumar Jena and 3 from George Barry. The home side recovered a little but 2 wickets for Dan Barry and 3 for skipper Kartic Subr saw DTs bowled out for 115 in under 30 overs. Although Sam Gilmour fell cheaply Martin Robertson & Ishan Samanta took the score to 80 before Robertson was bowled for 26. Samanta hit his first half century for the Arrows before he too was bowled with just 15 runs required. Barry Snr and Ollie McCallum saw them comfortably over the line to give the 5s back to back wins.
The final game of the weekend saw the Women’s 2s take on Prestwick at Grange Loan. Batting first the Arrows lost 3 early wickets before Sonia Amin and Sarah Law stabilised things for the home side. Law fell but Abby Caton entered the fray and the two young Arrows piled on the runs. Amin eventually fell for 56 in the final over while Caton finished on 56* in a total of 196 for 5 from their 30 overs. An early strike for Krithi Subr looked all for nothing as the visitors put on 114 for the 2nd wicket. Amin entered the attack and broke the partnership with her 2nd ball. Holly Salden then picked up the other set batter in the next over to leave the visitors an uphill task. Amin picked up 3 more wickets and Sladen 2 more as well as another for Subr to see Prestwick restricted to 153 for 9 and the Arrows ran out winners by 43 runs.
