Weekend roundup – 2nd/3rd May

The 1s were away at Inverleith to take on Stew Mel in the first round of EPL action.  Batting first the Arrows were 25 for none when the rain came after 3 overs.  After a lengthy break the game resumed as a 27 over match.  Chris McBride took the game to the home side, hitting 141* from only 70 balls, well supported by skipper Daniel Da Costa with 53 off 39.  The Arrows finished with a commanding 256 for 4.  Set a target of 261 from their 27 overs the home side got off to decent start before Rudy Adair claimed the first wicket.  Arun Pillai (sponsored by Umair Mohammed Cosmetic & Sports Dentistry) then took 3 wickets to keep Stew Mel well behind the rate.  Adair came back and picked up 2 more wickets in the final overs as the home side were restricted to 148 for 6, giving the Arrows a convincing win.

Back at Grange Loan, the 2s hosted Penicuik in the ESCA Championship.  Bowling first Tom Pedley had an early strike but the rain came with the visitors 25 for 1.  When they did get back on Pedley claimed 2 more wickets and Shreyas Tekale picked up a wicket to leave the visitors 111 for 5 at drinks although the Arrows lost the services of Aadi Khadse who picked up a nasty ankle injury in the field.  Tekale struck with the first ball after drinks but the Penicuik tail did well to take them to a total of 198 as they were bowled out in the 48th over.  With the time lost the Arrows innings was shortened to 30 overs with a revised target of 149.  All looked lost for the home side as they slumped to 54 for 5 but Pedley (29) and Rory Ledignham (39) salvaged things to keep the game alive.  With 9 runs need off 2 overs Charles Stronach hit 2 boundaries but then was caught leaving the injured Khadse to hobble into the fray with 1 run required.  Max D’Ulisse (21*) hit the winning run of the 2nd ball of the final over to get the 2s over the line in a nail-biting finish.

The 3s were a 12pm start at Peffermill to take on Edinburgh University Staff.  Having been inserted the early start caused havoc with the batting order as several players were late arriving having school cricket commitments in the morning.  Any crisis was averted as Scott Fraser (34) and Robbie Murray (51) put on 63 for the 2nd  wicket and ensured the Arrows were only 1 down at drinks.  Unfortunately no-one else was really able to push on but some late hitting from new man Chris Brennan (33*) took the Arrows to 168 for 8 from their 40 overs.  That total proved to be a good bit short as the home opener hit his second successive century as Uni Staff cruised home in the 31st over with John Gill picking up the solitary wicket for the Arrows.

The 5s travelled to Peebles for their ESCA Division 7 clash.  Euan Murray was again at the reins but the young Carlton side found life tough going in the Borders.  Tom Sweet & Arjun Shelke each picked up 2 wickets as the home side posted 191 for 4 from their 40 overs.  In reply there were 20s for Sam Gilmour, George Barry & Shelke but the Arrows fell well short, bowled out for 96 in the 35th over.

On Sunday the heavy overnight rain forced the cancellation of the Women’s 1s & 2s games as well as the 4s game against Gala 2 at Grange Loan.
