Weekend roundup – 7th/8th June

The 1s made the short journey to the north of the city to take on Grange at Portgower Place in round 6 of the EPL.  In a rain affected encounter Grange batted first and posted 120 for 6 in 28 overs.  Shiv Jhala was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 12 and there were wickets for Olly Davidson (2) & Arun Pillai.  Set a target of 139 in 28 overs the Arrows reached 25 for none in the 3rd over before the rain came back and no more play was possible forcing the game to be abandoned.

Back at Grange Loan the 2s hosted Morton.  Inserting the visitors Charles Stronach’s men had them 12 for 3 early on thanks to 2 wickets for Hector Murray and 1 for the skipper himself.  Morton recovered however and after several stoppages for rain the visitors finished on 189 for 7 from their 40 overs.  Rory Ledingham took 2 wickets and there was 1 each for Dougie Firth & Shreyas Tekale.  The weather then intervened without a ball being bowled of the second innings and this game too was abandoned.

The 3s were away at Roseburn Park to take on MDAFs in an ESCA Division 2 match.  The weather only allowed 5 overs of play before the match was called with Carlton sitting on 20 for 0.

Conditions at Craiglockhart were better as the 4s visited Watsonian 3s.  A delayed start saw the game reduced to 30 overs a side and captain Al Murray chose to bowl first.  Abhi Mehta struck early but the home side got the scoreboard moving.  In the end they were bowled out for 160 off the final ball of the 30 with Kartic Subr claiming 4 wickets and a run out, Stu Dawson picking up 3 wickets and 1 for Benji Risi.  A long rain delay saw the second innings reduced to 20 overs with 121 the revised target.  In reply Murray (40) & Scott Fraser (20) set a solid base for the chase with Risi hitting 24 to get the Arrows in sight of victory.  Chris Sale & Mehta saw the 4s over the line in the penultimate over for their 2nd win of the season.

On Sunday there was history made with what we believe is the first ever Club Girls Cup match in Scotland as our U16s took on their counterparts from Stew Mel.   Batting first the young Arrows were bowled out for 115 in the final over with Amy Yang leading the way with 37.  Unfortunately that total proved too little against the strong batting line up of the visitors.  There were 2 wickets for Elsie Fraser but Stew Mel reached the target in the 17th over to go through to the next round.

Also in action on Sunday were the Women who took on Grange at Newfield.  Batting first the Arrows hit 229 for 3 from their 30 overs with Abbi Aitken-Drummond dominating the innings with 113 not out.  There were also useful contributions from Charis Scott (28); Samantha Evans (27) and Flora Corbin (36*).  The Arrows then produced a clinical performance with the ball to bowl out the home side for just 44 with Corbin leading the way with 3 for 8.  The other successful bowlers were Maisie Maceira and Saskia Aldridge who took 2 apiece and there was 1 each for Scott and Keira Ansell in the 185 run win.

The 5s welcomed near neighbours Edinburgh South 4s to Grange Loan.  Batting first the visitors were soon in trouble thanks to 2 early strikes from Elliot Peltenburg.  A run out made matters worse before the introduction of Ollie McCallum to the attack brought immediate dividends to leave South 30 for 4 in the 13th over.  The visitors steadied the ship but the 5s kept a lid on the scoring rate.  More wickets for Angus Turner, McCallum (2), Tomos Hunt (2) & Fergus McKernan bowled South out for 128 in the 38th over.  Keith Murray & David Simpson made a watchful start before Murray was bowled for 16 on the stroke of drinks.  Hamish Turner hit a brisk 18 and then Simpson fell for 43 with 25 runs still required.  A clatter of wickets made the last few overs interesting but Euan Murray & Hunt saw the 5s to victory in the 39th over for an exciting 3 wicket win.
