Weekend roundup – 25th/26th April

The ESCA league season got underway with the 2s hosting Morton in the Championship.  Having been inserted Gav Murray’s men made little use of the fresh Grange Loan pitch as they were trundled out for 87 just after drinks.  Charles Stronach rolled back the years as he took 5 for 20 to give the 2s hope of an unlikely victory but the visitors got over the line 7 down in the 24th over.

The 3s were on the road at Campbell Park taking on Edinburgh CC 2s.  A strong batting performance from the hosts saw them post 234 for 8 from their 40 overs.  Tom Hathorn was the pick of the Arrows bowlers with 4 for 32.  The reply never really got going and although Pavan Yaradi did hit 39 the 3s were bowled out for 116 in the 35th over.

The 5s travelled to play Stew Mel 4s on the plastic at Inverleith.  Batting first the home side posted 242 for 6 with wickets for Atreya Subr, Rahul and Aaradhy Khadse along with 3 runouts.  In reply Dan Barry hit 50 and there were 20s for Subr & Ishan Samanta but in the end the 5 were bowled out for 129 in the 37th over.

On Sunday the 1s travelled to Mannofield to take on Aberdeenshire in round 1 of the Scottish Cup.  Asked to bat first the Arrows lost wickets at regular intervals but posted a competitive looking 222 thanks to 44s from Chris McBride & Shovik Chakraborty and 20s from Daniel Da Costa, James Stronach & Shiv Jhala.  Olly Davidson struck in the 3rd over and then Conor Regan took 4 for 15 to reduce the home side to 47 for 5.  The home side recovered somewhat before Davidson returned and pinned the set batter lbw to make it 107 for 6 in the 34th over.  Jhala took 2 and there was a third for Davidson before Arun Pillai (sponsored by Umair Mohammed Cosmetic & Sports Dentistry) took the final wicket to bowl the home side out for 136 and secure a second round tie away to Clydesdale in 2 weeks time.

The Women’s 2s were in action in the inaugural round of the new WPL 30 competition taking on their counterparts at Stew Mel.  Batting first the Arrows posted 174 for 3 thanks to 81 from Holly Sladen & 31 from Ajitha Rajan.  In reply Krithi Subr picked up 2 wickets and Rajan and Evie Miller also claimed wickets as well as 2 runouts to restrict Stew Mel to 165 for 6, getting their league campaign off to a winning start.

The final game of the weekend saw the 4s host Stew Mel 3s at Grange Loan on Sunday.  The Arrows were inserted and after a watchful start posted 168 for 7 with Samantha Evans leading the way with 66 along with 39 from Scott Fraser.  That total looked plenty as opening bowlers Abhi Mehta & Jake Heller reduced the visitors to 41 for 5 but a 123 run partnership from the visitors took the game away from the home side.  The partnership was eventually broken by the returning Metha but the damage had been done and Stew Mel won by 4 wicket with plenty of overs to spare.
