Weekend roundup – 20th/21st August

The weekend got off to an early start as the Over 50s were guests at Myreside to play their counterparts at Watsonians.  Bob Irvine lost the toss and the home team batted first, scoring 94 in their 16 overs.  Al Murray, Irvine, Pete Deakin & Martin Robertson all took one wicket apiece.  In reply Deakin & Murray both retired on 27* and the skipper hit the winning runs in the final over to secure a 4 wicket win.

On Saturday 1st XI entertained Forfarshire at Grange Loan on Saturday.  Skipper Tom Simpson lost the toss and the visitors opted to bat first.  Both teams wore black armbands in memory of Sandy Scotland who passed away last week.  Ally Evans and Ian Ramage spoke about the huge impact Sandy had had on the game in Scotland and the teams observed a minutes silence in his honour.  When play got underway the Broughty Ferry side got off to a fast start and it took until the last ball of the 15th over for the home side to claim the first wicket as Ruaridh McIntyre castled the aggressive Wallace with 71 on the board.  Angus Beattie dismissed the other opener in the 21st over with the score on 99 and next over Adeel Raza took a sharp return catch.  At the end of the 28th over Raza claimed his second wicket to make it 125 for 4.  A 98 run 5th wicket partnership tipped the game in the visitors favour and despite a couple of late wickets for Ally Evans Forfarshire posted 263 for 6 from their 50 overs.  The chase got off to a poor start when Simpson was bowled at the start of the 4th over and fellow opener Shujaa Khan picked out fine leg a few balls later.  Evans was also bowled in the 10th over to leave Carlton in deep trouble at 22 for 3 but Arun Pillai and Neville Madziva stabalised things for the home side.  Both fell in the 20th over with the score on 70 and there was no way back from that point.  In the end Carlton were bowled out for 116 in the 33rd over as the visitors ran out comfortable winners.

The 2nd XI were due to play away at Morton but the home side were unable to secure an appropriate venue so the game did not go ahead.  It will potentially be played next Sunday if a suitable venue can be found.

The 3rd XI travelled to Falkirk to take on Westquarter & Redding at Bailliefields.  Captain Brad McKay lost the toss and Carlton were inserted.  Anish Amin fell early but fellow opener Ben Thurman and Charlie Kentish took the score to 76 for 1 at drinks.  Kentish fell for 33 in the 22nd over and Rory Ledingham chipped in with a brisk 19 to leave the visitors 123 for 3 in the 28th over.  Thurman was still well set but wickets fell at the other end and Carlton finished on 186 for 9 from their 40 overs with Thurman carrying his bat for 93*.  A solid start for the home side was broken by Kyle Burgess in the 5th over.  Mark McKay then picked wickets in successive overs to leave the home side in trouble at 31 for 3 after 10.  Ferg Foley was the next to strike in the 25th over to make it 83 for 4 and he took another in the 29th to reduce Westquarter to 104 for 5.  Kentish then took a wicket in the 32nd over followed by a third for Foley the next over.  Kentish claimed his second and then Burgess returned to remove the last two batters to bowl out the home side for 132 and give the 3s a 54 run win.

Also on Saturday the 5th XI travelled to Prestonpans to play Tranent & Preston Village 3s.  Skipper Keith Murray won the toss and chose to bowl first.  The home side posted 184 for 7 from their 40 overs with 2 wickets a piece for Robbie Murray and Daniel Mowat.  Angus Turner and Aadi Khadse also picked up wickets as well as a run out for Harrison Fontenla.  The 5s struggled with the bat to chase down the total with only Ben Stronach (20) and Khadse (23) really coming to terms with conditions.  Mowat hit 17 not out at the end to collect a few more batting points but the 5s were bowled out for 116 in the 34th over to lose by 68 runs.

On Sunday the Women were playing in the semi-final of the Beyond Boundaries Women’s Scottish T20 Cup against Stewart’s Melville at Scroggie Park.  Captain Annette Aitken-Drummond won the toss and chose to bat first.  Janie Hemsley fell early but Abbi Aitken-Drummond and Zaara Dancu put on 109 for the second wicket.  When Dancu fell for 44 there was a clatter of other wickets as Carlton chased extra runs.  In the end the Women posted 130 from their 20 overs with Abbi Aitken-Drummond finishing on 64 not out from only 48 balls.  Unfortunately it proved to be not enough as Stew Mel chased down the total in the 15th over.  Masie Maceira & Ashley Robertson took wickets and there was a run out but in the end Carlton fell well short.

Back at Grange Loan the 4th XI entertained Drummond Trinity 3s.  Skipper Al Murray won the toss and opted to bowl first.   A decent start with the ball brought early wickets with Stu Dawson claiming 2 and Fraser Kentish 1 to leave the visitors 37 for 3 in the 10th over.  At the end of the 15th over Harry Charman combined with Ferg Foley to effect a run out to reduce DTs to 51 for 4.  A good 5th wicket partnership was eventually broken with a James Stronach stumping off Charman’s bowling.  Rory Ledingham was introduced to the attack and struck 3rd ball to make it 108 for 6 in the 30th over.  Kentish came back and claimed the 7th wicket and then Ledingham took a second but runs were beginning to flow for DTs.  Foley picked up the 9th wicket in the 37th over and Dawson came back to claim the final wicket in the 38th to bowl the visitors out for 158.  In reply the 4s lost David Simpson early but Murray and Stronach put on 49 for the second wicket before the young keeper fell for 27.  Murray was playing the anchor role and there was good impetus added by Ledingham (13) and Matthew Restall (16) to ensure the run rate never got out of hand.  When the 6th wicket fell, Kentish came in and blasted a quickfire 26 to get the 4s over the line in the final over for a 4 wicket win with the skipper finishing on 46 not out.

The Mixed Dev XI travelled to Lewisvale Park to take on Musselburgh.  In a slightly one-sided affair the home side racked up a big total which proved too much for the young Carlton team, although there were still plenty of positives to take from the game for the youngsters.

Also on Sunday there was a Lads & Dads match at Peebles.  Carlton batted first and scored 169 off their 30 overs with retirals for Tom, Mark, Finlay, Daniel & Brian.  The home side started the chase very quickly but great bowling from Aaradhi, Finlay, Daniel & Aadi tightened the game.  Unfortunately it was not quite enough as Peebles hit the winning runs with 2 balls to spare in a very sporting contest.
