Weekend roundup – 12th/13th July

The 1s hosted RHC at Grange Loan on Saturday with Fergus Foley making his debut for the 1s. Bowling first the Arrows made an early breakthrough through Jamie Beattie and then Foley struck in the 9th over to make it 50 for 2. Olly Davidson claimed the next 2 wickets but runs were flowing relatively freely. Harry Simpson then got in on the act in the 32nd over but RHC were well placed at 163 for 5. Another good partnership for the visitors was broken by Rory Allardice and there were further wickets for Davidson and Simpson (2) as well as a runout to bowl RHC out for 266. In reply, 2 early wickets had the Arrows on the back foot. Another 2 wickets in close succession had the home side in trouble at 67 for 4 but Daniel Da Costa and James Stronach rebuilt things. The pair took the score to 155 before Stronach went for 36. Shiv Jhala went next ball and Simpson successfully negotiated the hat-trick ball. He and Da Costs added 61 runs before Da Costa fell just 4 short of a hundred. That brought young Foley to the crease with 51 still needed. Some composed batting got them insight of victory before Simpson fell for 46 with the scores level. Allardice came in and hit the winning runs for a fine 2 wicket win.
Also on Saturday the 2s were at Newfield to take on Edinburgh Accies. Bowling first it took until the 17th over to make a breakthrough thanks to Shreyas Tekale with 62 on the board. Another good partnership for the home side was broken by Hamish Foley who claimed the 3rd wicket next ball to make it 119 for 3. More consolidation for the home side followed until Hector Murray got the 4th wicket with the score on 191. Skipper Charles Stronach then chipped in with 2 quick wickets to make it 205 for 6 but the Accies lower order accelerated the scoring. Despite wickets for Max D’Ulisse (2) and Aadi Khadse and a runout the home side were bowled out for a formidable 288 in the final over. All of the Arrows top and middle order got starts but only Charlie Kentish was able to get past 50. With the required rate getting away from the visitors Kentish eventually fell for 68 from just 59 balls leaving the lower order with too much to do. The 2s finished on 233 for 9 to lose by 55 runs.
The 3s were on duty at Loretto School as they hosted Dunfermline & Carnegie. Batting first they lost both openers with the score on 18 but Robbie Murray & Hamish Turner formed a good 3rd wicket partnership. The pair took the score to 94 before Turner was bowled for 35. Murray struggled to find anyone to stay with him and when he was the 6th wicket to fall, 3 runs short of his half century, the home side were in trouble with only 128 runs on the board. The tail failed to wag to any great extent as the Arrows were bowled out for 142 in the 37th over. That total always looked light and so it proved as the Fifers chased it down in the 27th over for the loss of only 3 wickets. Maisie Maceira & captain Brad McKay (2) were the only successful bowlers.
The final game on Saturday saw the 5s travel to Arboretum to take on Holy Cross 2s. Bowling first there was an early strike for Elliot Peltenburg but the home side consolidated and began to get the scoreboard moving. Ollie McCallum & Lawrence Bennett then claimed wickets before handing over to the experienced duo of Kartic Subr & Rahul Khadse. The scoring rate slowed and wickets began to fall with Subr picking up 4 and 2 for Khadse. All that was left was for Peltenburg to come back and clain the final wicket to bowl out Holy Cross for 146. The reply got off to a terrible start when skipper Keith Murray went for a duck but Ian Thompson and Atreya Subr stuck in and started to up the rate. Thompson fell for 37 just before drinks to make it 67 for 2 but Subr Jnr was going well. Another couple of wickets fell bringing Neil McCallum to the crease and he and Subr took the 5s to the brink of victory before Subr went for 59. Subr Snr made his way to the middle and watched as McCallum Snr hit the winning runs as the Arrows recorded a 5 wicket win.
On Sunday the 4s welcomed Gala 2s to Grange Loan. Opting to bowl first Kyle Burgess and Rohan Kumar Jena kept things tight early on before Burgess struck in the 9th over to make it 24 for 1. Stu Dawson claimed the 2 wicket and John Carpenter got the 3rd to leave Gala 76 for 3 in the 22nd over. A decent 4th wicket partnership was forming before Hamish Turner intervened, taking a hat-trick in the 29th over to make it 108 for 6. Benji Risi then got a wicket in the next over before Turner claimed his 4th to make it 120 for 8. Turner completed his 5-for and Kumar Jena came back to claim the final wicket to bowl the visitors out for 144. In reply Scott Fraser fell in the first over and then David Simpson also fell cheaply to leave the 4s in trouble at 16 for 2. Captain Al Murray & Hamish Turner got things back on track but neither could go on and produce a match winning innings. Nor were any of the other batters able to produce an telling contribution and in the end the Arrows were bowled out for 117 to lose by 27 runs.
