Weekend roundup – 14th/15th June

The Scottish summer struck with a vengeance on Saturday as heavy overnight rain, continuing until mid afternoon, put paid to any chance of cricket being played.  The 1s, 2s, 3s & 4s were all called off early so at least the players got their Saturday afternoons back.

The rain did eventually stop and the games on Sunday were able to go ahead.

The Women hosted MDAFs at Grange Loan in round 7 of the WPL.  Batting first the Arrows lost Abbi Aitken-Drummond early but Sarah Beith & skipper Samantha Evans steadied the ship.  Both gout out in quick succession leaving the home side 87 for 3 just after drinks.  Flora Corbin (46*) & Janie Hemsley (44*) then combined to add 115 runs for the 4th wicket to set the visitors 203 to win from their 30 overs.  A steady start with the bat for MDAFs was undone by the introduction of Elsie Fraser to the attack.  2 wickets in 3 balls saw the visitors reduced to 31 for 2 in the 9th over and it got worse when Corbin picked up 3 more wickets to make it 48 for 5.  Agnes Foley & Sonia Amin also picked up a wicket each and a run out in the final over saw MDAFs restricted to 128 for 8 to give the Arrows an 82 run win.

The only other league game to survive the weather was the 5s who played Drummond Trinity 5s on the grass at Inverleith Park.  The previous days rain didn’t make for a batting paradise and on winning the toss captain Keith Murray had no hesitation in inserting the home side.  2 wickets for Elliot Peltenburg and a Hamish Foley runout had DTs in trouble at 10 for 3.  A mini-recovery was halted with the introduction of Fergus McKernan and Stu Dawson to the attack as the pair picked up 4 and 3 wickets respectively to bowl the home side out for 43 in the 21st over.  Regular opening pair of Murray & Martin Robertson were happy to stand aside for the young team of Josh Cully & Foley – any suggestion that they were protecting their averages is pure speculation.  It proved to be an excellent decision as the schoolboys knocked off the runs with the minimum of fuss to give the 5s a 10 wicket win in the 10th over.

Also on Sunday there was a successful (and victorious) outing for the Mixed Dev Team against Stew Mel on the plastic at Inverleith.  Everyone batted, six youngsters bowled the 30 overs between them, and four pairs of Shelkes, Amins, Sweets and Gilmours took to the field.  Special mention to Arjun who took 5-11 and had to be removed from the attack so that a few wickets were left for the others.
