R'burn

50 for 9

Sam Galloway 3 for 3, Keshav Arvind 1 for 1

This was an excellent performance from the newly formed joint Carlton-Murrayfield-DAFS U-15 team who very quickly bonded into a strong unit in this opening match at Roseburn Park.

Batting first in glorious evening sunshine, the Carlton-MDAFS innings was dominated by a 73 run second wicket stand between opener Tim Harvey and Ben Falconer.  Ben batted superbly, accelerating the innings with clean hitting – including one marvellous six – and sharp running between the wicket, finally retiring on 33 (1 six, 3 fours) in style with another fierce drive for a boundary.

Watsonians however battled back well with a flurry of wickets claimed by Jones (2-11), Henderson (2-12) and Richardson (2-5).  Tim Harvey, who had steadied the innings, finally fell for a patient 19 to Henderson.

A final flourish with the bat by Ross Kneebone (11) and Keshav Arvind (9 not out) saw Carlton-Murrayfield-DAFS to 125 for 7 off the allotted 20 overs.

In reply, Watsonians never got going in the face of excellent tight bowling and no batsman got into double figures – M Henderson batting at 10 top scored with 7. Watsons finishing on 50-9 having recovered from 28-8.

The bowling was shared around the Carlton-MDAFS team with 9 bowlers used. The pick of the bunch Sam Galloway with 3-3 from 2 overs, and other wicket takers Louis Robinson with 1-7 from 3 overs, Keshav Arvind 1-1 from two excellent overs of spin, and Ross Kneebone 1-7 from 2 overs. Three well worked run-outs were also executed by the team.

Man of the match undoubtedly goes to Ben Falconer not only for his excellent 33 but also an excellent wicket-keeping display with constant encouragement provided to his new team mates from behind the stumps.

80 for 9

Ross Kneebone 2 for 7

94 for 8

Finlay Ross 20

Skipper Finlay Ross was delighted to get first use of the usual 'interesting' Meadows track and went on to play the anchor role as the MDAFS/Carlton side built a challenging total.

Ben Falconer opened with his skipper and started aggressively before being undone by the uneven bounce, gloving an attempted pull to square leg. Louis Robinson played sensibly as Finlay began to play his shots before eventually falling for a fine 20, trying to loft over the tight infield.

Ross Kneebone displayed some excellent technique before young Calum Everett marshalled the tail expertly towards a decent 20 over total of 94; he and Louis both ending unbeaten.

A good opening spell from Finlay had Edinburgh on the backfoot before Anas Tahir picked up the first wicket and Ross bowled the defining spell of the match, picking up two important wickets -both clean bowled. On a cold night when the number of wides from both sides threatened to reach epidemic proportions, Calum showed the way with three overs of immaculate line and length. Alexander Short picked up a wicket with the help of a Ben stumping. The keeper then sealed an excellent display with a great stumping off a cunning Keshav Arvind wide.

Two out of two for the new side. But they definitely need a snappier name than Murrayfield DAFS/Carlton B ...

94 for 5

Olly Brown 2 for 6

away

93 for 5

Will Brown 30

With most schools in Edinburgh seeming to have some sort of end-of-term event, the resources of DAFS & Carlton were fully stretched for the trip to Haddington.

Happily, the late call-up of Will Brown, with brother Olly in tow, helped the previously unbeaten visitors put out a side, albeit containing a number of young players.

An experienced and very useful Haddingtion opening bowling attack had our side in trouble early on before the experienced duo of Will (30) and Fin Ross (14) steadied the ship, allowing the lower order (including Olly with 14*) to add a late flurry to take us to some respectability.

The Haddington top order of Hardwick and Tufail got off to a flyer before the introduction of WIll (1 for 6 off 3) stemmed the flow. Oliver Fenton also returned respectable figures of 2-0-7-1, while young Olly B ended up the best figures with 3-0-6-2. Not enough, though, as the home side cruised to a 5 wicket win.
