Carlton U15 posted a convincing win in their first round U15 ECB Cup match against Poloc at Inch Park with a perfectly timed run chase, leaving three overs to spare. Both teams put on strong partnerships for the first wicket, Poloc’s Malik with a powerful 50*, but while Poloc collapsed once their openers departed, 31 from Ewan and a swashbuckling 51* by man of the match Rua McIntyre took the game away from the visitors.
Opting to bat first, Poloc openers Malik and Siddiqui put on 81 without loss after 14 overs. Jamie and Matthew deV bowled accurately without reward, runs coming from a series of straight drives down the ground. The Ewan / Euan spin twins were also unable to stem the flow of boundaries, including a mighty slapped six, before skipper Cameron made the breakthrough, bowling Siddique for 31. With Malik retiring soon after, Cameron and Rua Mc then ran through the Poloc middle order taking 4 wickets and a run out in the final three overs, leaving Poloc on Nelson.
Carlton openers Gav and Ewan began watchfully, rotating the strike well and scampering 1s and 2s, but it was not until the 10th over that Ewan struck the first boundary. When Gav was run out the same over for a composed 19, Carlton were 41-1. Then Ewan accelerated, striking a succession of fours before holing out to Malik for 31. Not to be outdone, Rua set about the Poloc bowling with gusto, striking eight boundaries in 51* off 26 balls – breathtaking batting – with Cameron (6*) spectating from the non-striker's end.
It was a great all round performance, and credit to everyone for the almost flawless fielding performance and creating a supportive atmosphere in the field. Many thanks to Poloc for the game – the next round brings more visitors from the West as we host Clydesdale.
A big thank you to Bill Polson and Edinburgh South for being so accommodating, which allowed us to get the fixture played.
