The sun was shining and the pasty early season skin sizzling, as Carlton welcomed Arbroath to Grange Loan for the 3rd league game of the season. The home side were given a boost by the long-awaited arrival of new professional Michael Castle, after visa complications had delayed his arrival. Relations between the Home Office and the club have thankfully thawed in the intervening years since Michael Radnidge’s departure.

The Castle marked his arrival in the country with a barnstorming innings of 180 odd the previous Thursday and it was pleasing to see him with a beer in hand following the conclusion of his innings. Pints of lager aside, his short back and sides haircut has gone a long way to re-affirming our faith in the Aussie male cricketer. On that note, it was pleasing to hear Michael Herdman’s name mentioned in dispatches following the ball tampering scandal and ongoing disquiet over the Australian cricket team culture. Herdy would certainly bring a certain zen to the side and it’s difficult to see David Warner being as affective as the attack dog on a strict vegan diet.

The day commenced with the customary game of touch rugby, pitting the elder statesman against the young guns. The victorious oldies were boosted by the return of hard running Craig Marshall in what Captain Evans later admitted was a ‘big rig based selection.’

Carlton won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that looked good for batting. The Carlton innings got off to the worst possible start with the loss of Tom Simpson as he chipped one to short cover. Simmo struggled to find his rhythm early on with the WhatsApp taunts of Mikey Brown and Ben Dulisse the night before still clearly fresh in the memory. This brought the Castle to the crease who began to unleash several big shots to the boundary. Unfortunately Arun soon followed, bringing Marshall to the crease. Castle slowed a little during the beginning of his partnership with Marshall, presumably a little taken aback that he couldn’t lay claim to having the biggest pipes in the league. Despite being sledged by the opposition and labelled “the worst batsman in the league” Marshall began to put his sizeable backside through a few shots as he and Castle built a useful partnership. Castle eventually fell for 49 after a number of sweetly timed boundaries and Marshall soon followed.

Porker Neame was the next batsman in. Having hit the gym hard over the winter and shed some excess weight, there was concern Porker would lose some of his effectiveness. Fortunately Porker isn’t familiar with the Book of Judges and has never heard of the biblical tale of Samson, as he swatted away a number of big bombs to the leg side boundary. Porker was joined at the crease by Captain Evans and they built an effective partnership, punishing the bad balls that came their way, although both would eventually fall in the 40’s. The innings petered out thereafter and Carlton’s innings finished on a disappointing 232 all out.

The food provided by the Carlton tea ladies was a triumph as usual. Pre-advanced warning of Evan’s ‘big rig based selection policy’ had clearly filtered through, as the portions were plentiful and enjoyed by all. The young Carlton side promised an excellent fielding performance, although this didn’t materialise as the home side looked like they were walking off the effects of their large helpings at tea for the first 20 overs. This coupled with some wayward bowling allowed the Arbroath openers to race to a quick start. By the time the home side began to re-dress their failings in the field the game was already beginning to slip away and their demise was later confirmed as the Arbroath professional’s innings of 50 guided his side to victory.

All in all, it was a disappointing performance. Four batsmen got themselves to 30/40 and were dismissed of their own fault rather than as a result of their opponent’s skill, resulting in a below par total. This was compounded by a poor display in the field and ultimately Arbroath were worthy winners. The lads enjoyed a rowdy court session after the match and here’s hoping the boys will stick together and work hard to turn the team’s fortunes around.
