Grange Loan was graced with glorious sunshine as the 1st team were hosts to Watsonians.
Having won the toss Carlton elected to bat first on a wicket that appeared pleasant for the beginning of a Scottish season.
Rory McCann got into his work with some elegant looking and wonderfully timed shots - with brilliant support by Arun Pillai (45) at the other end as we steadily coasted to a foundation of 130-3 at the halfway stage. As McCann progressed to his solid century, he was supported by some late rearguard action by Ruari Macpherson, who helped to inject some needed urgency to increase the runrate, taking the total to 253-5 from our 50 with McCann walking off unbeaten on 123.
The Watsonian innings got off to a hampered start as they lost a couple of early wickets - crucially the key wicket of Michael Carson - thanks to skipper Ali Evans. However, George Munsey came to the crease with some mighty striking clearing the short boundary off the seamers early doors, and then later hit some humungous sixes into the apartments at his first opportunity at spin.
Watsonians seemed to be cruising, needing only 4 runs an over when centurion Munsey (101) fell to a full toss , slightly mishitting it, to be caught by Shivamm Gupta's stunning effort running round and in from the boundary (below). A momentum shifting and ultimately game changing moment no doubt.
Furthermore, ‘Shiv’ came back for his second spell, running in with the wind this time to take a magnificent 5 wicket haul on debut to seal the 72 run victory on the first team's opening match, showing there is much to look forward to from the season ahead with such a young and talented side with strong leadership.
A fantastic performance all round from the team as a new unit and an excellent game of cricket from both teams.

Fresh off a great win against Watsonians the previous week the 1st XI travelled to face last year's champions Heriot's CC. The sun was shining at Goldenacre and the wicket looked flat, prompting Heriot's to bat first after winning the toss.
The opening bowlers set the tone and bowled aggressively. Evo struck early with an LBW before Shiv had the other opener as he played on. Heriot's soon found themselves three wickets down with Evo removing the dangerous Van Derg Berg caught behind.
Heriots recovered however with a partnership between Ross and Shean, with Ross batting responsibly and Shean taking the initiative to be the aggressor. Tight bowling from the spinners as well as Omar built pressure and brought the wicket of Shean (37) off Arun’s bowling. With Ross still at the crease we were able to restrict the amount of bowling he faced and kept chipping away with wickets from the other end, with Omar striking, followed by two more from Arun and three wickets from Raza. Raza picked up the important wicket of Ross (70) with a good caught and bowled effort and Heriot's were eventually bowled out for a below par 174 in 43.5 overs.
The Heriot's teas certainly delivered with a standout chicken curry, which unlike mainstream EDM music was mixed well, combining just the right amount of flavour and spice!
With the target of 174 set, Kyle and Parker got things up and running. Heriot's started well, with very tight bowling from the openers. After getting into double figures Carlton's openers both found themselves back in the pavilion. Both Arun and Ali were then dismissed not long after and Carlton found themselves four wickets down with not many runs on the board.
In much need of a partnership Simmo and Boydy began to rebuild, both looking good at the crease. However the introduction of a new bowler brought about the wicket of Simmo (24) who was then closely followed by Boydy (17).
The Heriot's spinners bowled well and controlled one end whilst pace attacked at the other. Wickets fell at frequent intervals leading to the Carlton run rate falling behind what was needed. Some late resistance from the dynamic due of Rumac (27) and Omar dragged out the game but it was in vain with the last wicket falling in the 45th over 46 runs short of the Heriots target.

The sun was shining and the pasty early season skin sizzling, as Carlton welcomed Arbroath to Grange Loan for the 3rd league game of the season. The home side were given a boost by the long-awaited arrival of new professional Michael Castle, after visa complications had delayed his arrival. Relations between the Home Office and the club have thankfully thawed in the intervening years since Michael Radnidge’s departure.
The Castle marked his arrival in the country with a barnstorming innings of 180 odd the previous Thursday and it was pleasing to see him with a beer in hand following the conclusion of his innings. Pints of lager aside, his short back and sides haircut has gone a long way to re-affirming our faith in the Aussie male cricketer. On that note, it was pleasing to hear Michael Herdman’s name mentioned in dispatches following the ball tampering scandal and ongoing disquiet over the Australian cricket team culture. Herdy would certainly bring a certain zen to the side and it’s difficult to see David Warner being as affective as the attack dog on a strict vegan diet.
The day commenced with the customary game of touch rugby, pitting the elder statesman against the young guns. The victorious oldies were boosted by the return of hard running Craig Marshall in what Captain Evans later admitted was a ‘big rig based selection.’
Carlton won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that looked good for batting. The Carlton innings got off to the worst possible start with the loss of Tom Simpson as he chipped one to short cover. Simmo struggled to find his rhythm early on with the WhatsApp taunts of Mikey Brown and Ben Dulisse the night before still clearly fresh in the memory. This brought the Castle to the crease who began to unleash several big shots to the boundary. Unfortunately Arun soon followed, bringing Marshall to the crease. Castle slowed a little during the beginning of his partnership with Marshall, presumably a little taken aback that he couldn’t lay claim to having the biggest pipes in the league. Despite being sledged by the opposition and labelled “the worst batsman in the league” Marshall began to put his sizeable backside through a few shots as he and Castle built a useful partnership. Castle eventually fell for 49 after a number of sweetly timed boundaries and Marshall soon followed.
Porker Neame was the next batsman in. Having hit the gym hard over the winter and shed some excess weight, there was concern Porker would lose some of his effectiveness. Fortunately Porker isn’t familiar with the Book of Judges and has never heard of the biblical tale of Samson, as he swatted away a number of big bombs to the leg side boundary. Porker was joined at the crease by Captain Evans and they built an effective partnership, punishing the bad balls that came their way, although both would eventually fall in the 40’s. The innings petered out thereafter and Carlton’s innings finished on a disappointing 232 all out.
The food provided by the Carlton tea ladies was a triumph as usual. Pre-advanced warning of Evan’s ‘big rig based selection policy’ had clearly filtered through, as the portions were plentiful and enjoyed by all. The young Carlton side promised an excellent fielding performance, although this didn’t materialise as the home side looked like they were walking off the effects of their large helpings at tea for the first 20 overs. This coupled with some wayward bowling allowed the Arbroath openers to race to a quick start. By the time the home side began to re-dress their failings in the field the game was already beginning to slip away and their demise was later confirmed as the Arbroath professional’s innings of 50 guided his side to victory.
All in all, it was a disappointing performance. Four batsmen got themselves to 30/40 and were dismissed of their own fault rather than as a result of their opponent’s skill, resulting in a below par total. This was compounded by a poor display in the field and ultimately Arbroath were worthy winners. The lads enjoyed a rowdy court session after the match and here’s hoping the boys will stick together and work hard to turn the team’s fortunes around.
