Carlton Women started off their league campaign with an evening T20 against old enemies George Watson’s. Last season’s loss against them was the only blemish on an otherwise untainted results list. Captain Helen Blair was determined for it to be a different story in 2014 and the strong team line-up for the Craiglockhart fixture boded well.
With a late 6pm start to allow everyone time to get there from work, the main concern was the light. Full of confidence, stand-in coin-tosser Ollie Rae (as HB was still sprinting from work) put us in to bowl hoping for some quick wickets. The Carlton team did just about manage to arrive before the 6pm start with Annette Drummond strapping on wicket keeping pads as she ran out of the changing room. The lack of warm up didn’t deter the opening bowling attack of Helen Blair and Lily Steindl who prevented George Watson’s from reaching double figures until the 7th over. Blair was the first to strike, clean bowling Dick in her third over. Lily took a wicket soon after, with Sarah Bryce skying the ball to Lisa Thomson at square leg who took a magnificent catch way above her head while completely blinded by the setting sun.
Some tight bowling by Helen and Lily and tremendous fielding by everyone kept the run rate very low, with Watson’s only managing 19 runs in their first 10 overs. First change bowler Cat Tams, back in the Carlton fold after two years’ absence, took the next wicket with a classy caught and bowled. Watson’s number 3, Kathryn Bryce, dug in a bit at this point and managed to sneak a few boundaries past the Carlton defence. With the run rate creeping up, another wicket was exactly what was needed - Helen Hiley stepped up, clean bowling Fontana. However Kathryn Bryce was still slowly racking up the score. She was finally stopped on 35 in the last over, when quick fielding and an accurate throw in from Jenny Nobes at point allowed Drummette to knock the bails off and claim the fifth wicket. George Watson’s finished on 59-5 off their 20 overs, thanks to tight bowling and strong fielding from the Carlton side.
With the light fading, an executive decision was taken to postpone teas and the hungry Carlton opening pair of Helen Hiley and Ollie Rae went straight back out, needing 60 to win. Ollie went after the target with a vengeance, swiftly hitting two boundaries until being bowled by one of those balls that kept very low, the type which were to vex the Carlton players for the rest of the innings. Annette was the next to fall leaving Carlton 19-2 in the fourth over. The Tams/Hiley third wicket partnership steadied the ship for a few overs, bringing the score to 37 in the 9th over until Tams was caught out by the low ball and departed for 10.
The captain then strode in to try and finish things off. Unfortunately Helen Hiley got caught out by that low ball and was bowled for 16. Jenny Nobes joined HB at the crease and the two of them set about chasing those last few runs. Jenny finished the innings off with a well-struck 4 and the Carlton were victorious! A great start to the season and the team were looking in fine form with some outstanding fielding and tight bowling.

The Carlton Women’s Selection committee dusted off their pens on Tuesday morning and sent an enquiring email asking if anyone actually wanted to play some cricket on Sunday. Unfortunately the first reply sent a shockwave through the committee. A clash with an U17 away fixture! Our star U17 players and their coaches had to be added to the unavailable list. After getting over the shock the committee remembered that we actually have a full squad of other wonderful players and whilst the U17’s and their star coaches would be missed, it would allow others to take the limelight for once! A team filled with other star players (well, 10 of them) was assembled and started the long trek to Glasgow… after a slight delay waiting for everyone’s alarm clocks to go off.
The Star X started off the day with a tour of Glasgow’s cricket grounds before finally settling on Glasgow Accies’ School Ground. Our esteemed captain survived her trip around Glasgow’s motorway system and went out to the middle to try and lose the toss, in keeping with tradition. However she didn’t manage this and accidentally won it. Trusting in Carlton’s batting prowess, Helen put Glasgow Accies in to bowl and then remembered that she actually had to come up with a batting order.
 Blair and Willis went in to bat and faced off the first few overs against the Accies’ opening bowlers, bringing out the forward defensive and running the odd single. They then changed tack and spent the next 18 overs hitting boundaries. Ruth was the first to make 50, hitting it off 30 balls. Helen followed suit, taking 38 balls to make her half-century. Ruth then accelerated further, playing a range of beautiful shots, cutting and pulling to the boundary. With the runs piling up, Carlton’s resident statistician suddenly woke up and realised that firstly Ruth was about to hit the first ever Carlton Women’s century and secondly the pair had already broken all the partnership records. Ruth pulled the ball back of square and her run total ticked over to 103. The Carlton team erupted. An absolute fantastic achievement! The Blair-Willis first wicket partnership was at 208, helped by the odd extra from Glasgow, when Helen hit the ball a tad early and the bowler managed to cling on to it. Helen departed for 60 and Jenny Scully, returning to Carlton after a short break, joined Ruth at the crease to smash a few more runs off the last few overs. Scully finished 13 not out off only 6 balls. Ruth was undoubtedly the star of the innings, with 128 not out, smashing the last ball for 6 and smashing Carlton Women’s top score record of 79. Carlton ended their innings 252-1 off the 20 overs (a nice healthy run rate of 12.6 an over!).
After a quick tea break, Carlton took to the field. New Carlton recruit Zara Shad opened the bowling, bowling a good line and length and was duly rewarded in her second over, clean bowling one of Glasgow’s openers. At the other end, Louie Gardiner was bowling some offies, trying to tempt the batters into having a swing. Which they did. And missed. Another clean bowled. Zara took another in her third over and Glasgow Accies were 3 down by the 5th over. Fatima Shah, another new Carlton player, with one or two well-known Carlton brothers, took over in partnership with Christina Evans. Glasgow kept the score slowly ticking over with some aggressive running. Christina put a stop to that, striking twice in an over with both batters caught by Scully at midwicket. The first was a good catch but the second was brilliantly held. Another worthy signing from Edinburgh University Cricket Club! The strong relationship between EUCC and Carlton is paying dividends for the squad, now with one current and two former EUCC captains, an ex-president and a number of other players all performing for Carlton.
Lily Cartwright then came on to attempt some leg breaks in partnership with Eilidh Nicolson. The Glasgow tail was tempted into hitting one of them but mistimed it and hit it straight to the captain at midwicket. One more wicket needed, Glasgow only on 50 with 15 overs gone. The Glasgow captain was at the wicket and played an interesting innovative shot to Cartwright’s slower ball which went up in the air and looked like it was going to land a couple of metres away in no-man’s land. The bowler started to turn away, walking back to her fielding position, when, out of nowhere, fielder-extraordinaire Jenny Scully raced forward from square leg, arm outstretched and dived. The ball came down slowly, Scully’s hand stretching forward, and stuck. Out caught. Match over. Carlton win by 195 runs. 2014 100% winning record maintained! Some absolutely fantastic performances from the Star X and great momentum to be carried forward to our next league match against Dumfries.
