In the second encounter with Livingston in a week, this time in the Scottish Cup, the Carlton U13s batted first and posted a healthy 159 for 2. Gregor (33*), Ben (30*), Pete (23) and Murray (20) were in the runs, though E. X. Tras also made a significant contribution to the total.
Carlton's disciplined bowling attack restricted the young Livingston boys until their key batsman came in at 4 and upped the rate a little. However he came in with only 5 overs to go and ran out of partners on the penultimate ball, incidentally leaving young Benji precariously sitting on a hat-trick. Benji took 3 for 16, but there was also a wicket apiece for Euan (1 for 2), Duncan (1 for 4), Ruairidh (1 for 9) and Murray (1 for 12). The other boys bowled tightly and proved too disciplined for most of the Livingston batters. As ever there was a great Carlton effort in the field.
Thanks to Alasdair for allowing us to use and for preparing the excellent grass strip. Thanks also to Fi for purloining the remnants of the 3s cakes from yesterday and making cups of coffee and tea, and to Marjorie whose scones win her the MVP for baking.

Sometimes in life you have a day when you hear things said that are rarely if ever spoken. Rarer still the day when you hear two unheard comments......Such was this Sunday: 'Phew...it's hot here at Peffermill' - a first for most of us; and, 'Boy, the outfield is cut short and running fast!'. diem mirabilis. It was a pleasure to host Arbroath who are clearly a junior and family friendly club like ours. It was a young side they had with them, but with two Salmonds among them (with uncle George in the travelling support) and a club reputation that preceded them, we were not going to take them lightly.
Winning the toss, Murray elected to have a bat on the rapidly drying ground. He himself got Carlton off to a rollicking start and Ruairidh soon joined in. When Ruairidh was out for a quick fire 20 in the fifth over their opening partnership was worth 51. An excellent platform had been laid. Murray soon retired on 30 but Gregor and Harry ensured that the run rate remained high....Harry in particular picking up where the openers left off with a run a ball 25 in a partnership of 40 odd. Further partnerships of 32 between Cameron (17 not out ) and Douglas (7), and of 16 between Cameron and Euan (6 not out) kept the run rate up and resulted in a total of 144 for the loss of 5 wickets. It was a good display of fast scoring, hard running and strong partnerships.
The Carlton bowling effort got off to the best possible start too with Murray picking up the key wicket of Sinclair in the first over. Accurate bowling then restricted the Arbroath reply and they quickly fell behind the required run rate. The damage, however, was inflicted by Cameron's brilliant and devastating spell which claimed 5 wickets in 4 overs for 1 run ripping the heart out of the Arbroath innings. All the bowlers bowled very well: Scott finishing with 0 for 15, Murray 1 for 20, Gregor 0 for 4, Benji 0 for 6, Fabien 1 for 4 and Euan 2 for 1. Ben was good behind the stumps taking a good catch and making some fine stops. The virtue of bowling a good line was underlined by the fact that of the 14 wickets to fall on the day, 12 were bowled and one was lbw. Some concern was expressed at the state of one of the umpire's eyesight, though, and dark mutterings were heard about Specsavers from one Carlton player who was sure he'd taken a brilliant low catch only to be informed that the umpire did not have a clear view of his effort. Fear not...the umpire in question had a miraculous recovery, spotting Di's bacon butties at a distance of over 100 paces. The Lord moves in mysterious ways.
The result...a Carlton win by 88 runs.
Many thanks to the Carlton parents who turned out in force for the game and showed that not only do their children play cricket hard but that we welcome our opponents warmly too. The Peffermill ground staff also deserve our thanks for allowing the game to take place after Saturday's deluge and for taking such care to clear the ground of cut grass. We look forward to finals day at Goldenacre on the 22nd. And we must also thank Kevin for getting out of his bed at an unearthly hour, donning his wellies (and white stick) and going down to Peffermill to make sure that it wasn't under water before Arbroath set off at 7.15.

A clinical display against a promising young Falkland side sent Carlton into the cup final against old rivals Grange.
The Carlton bowling was on the button from the outset with good spells from Cameron and Pete stalling the Falkland batting before old hands Gregor (below) and Ruairidh pitched in with a couple of wickets apiece to help dismiss the Fifers for just 62.
The opening partnership between Murray and Ruairidh took the Carlton boys most of the way before both were dismissed. An impressive all-round display with sound batting, good attacking bowling and excellent fielding. |

Ruairdh set off like a train, smashing the ball to all parts in taking 12 off the first over. However, after he was bowled for 19 going for another big one the wheels rather came off the Carlton batting. Murray (below) stayed calm however, batting through to an impressive unbeaten 30 before retiring, leaving Ben to shepherd the tail through to a respectable 94 for 7.
Perhaps straining that little bit too much to defend the under-par total, the Carlton bowling wasn't as impressive as in the semi-final with the numbers of extras soon making a difference. Pete bowled a fine spell, picking up a couple of wickets and was unlucky not to get more. However, the Grange batting was too strong and they ran out deserved winners by 7 wickets.

Carlton won the toss against a young and inexperienced Clackmannanshire side and put the visitors in to bat. Clacks found it difficult to score against the Carlton attack and wickets fell at regular intervals. Everyone bowled 2 overs: Pete 0 for 4; Murray 0 for 5; Gregor 1 for 5; Ruairidh 0 for 9; Scott 1 for 2; Cameron 2 for 2; Fabien 0 for 5; Hari 1 for 3; Euan 2 for 2; and Harry 0 for 1.
Clacks scored 21 off the bat but benefitted from 20 extras, mainly wides. 41 for 8 was the total to beat.
Ben (19) and Euan (13*) opened the batting and took Carlton to 39 with some positive running before Ben was caught at slip. Scott came in and kept Euan company whilst he knocked off the remaining runs. In the end a comfortable win by 9 wickets with plenty of overs to spare.
The combined u13 squad can feel proud of their achievements this year in reaching two finals days. Hopefully we can go one better than we did in the ECB cup come August 10th.
Thanks to Russell and Alasdair for their hard work in preparing the pitch and to everyone who brought along some baking - the scorer particularly enjoyed the Carlton coloured cup cakes........very patriotic!
