Kelso were the visitors for the first match of the new season at the 3s’ adopted home of Peffermill. Carlton welcomed a couple of debutants in Chris Patterson and Robbie Donaldson, I'm sure two good additions to the club. Kelso won the toss and went in to bat, with Robbie and Sam Marchbank opening the bowling. It was an encouraging start for the new skipper with only 5 runs coming off the first 5 overs. The good start continued with the first of the Kelso openers, Henderson' departing for 3 in the 9th over, Robbie showing he has that dangerous 3s wicket taking delivery, the low full toss. The Kelso skipper started to play his shots, with their number 3 just supporting. On came Calum and Amit, both coming close with some LBW shouts, however their skipper kept accumulating the runs. Finally Amit had their number 3 caught well in the deep by Chris in the 17th over with the score on 60.

Things seemed to be going well until the Kelso batsmen decided to up the tempo. A few long hops and wide deliveries cost some runs until Shuaib came on with some fine bowling and eventually got the skipper caught by his opposite number for 87. By this point the score was on 142 in the 35th over and Carlton attempted to tighten the screw. This seemed to be going well when Sam returned to dismiss their number 4 and 6 in quick succession, however Gray coming in at 7 had other ideas. Playing a typical pinch hitting role, he eventually holed out off Calum, scoring a quick 39. Kelso finishing on a formidable 211-5.

After a fantastic tea, Carlton set about the chase. Opening with the skipper was Ani, a seasoned player and so the partnership looked solid. That was until he decided to try and hit out in the fifth over, getting clean bowled. Ollie then came to the crease and showed her class, mixing solid defence with crisp drives. Meanwhile at the other end, Fed was as always, being methodical and just trying not to get out. Ollie played very well, unfortunately just walking past one and being stumped for 20. Amit then came in and immediately had to try and be aggressive, seeing as the score was only on 78 in the 23rd over. Unfortunately he didn't have time to get his eye in and ended up hitting the ball to the Kelso skipper, being one of the 3 victims he caught. This brought around a slight collapse with Calum then Fed being run out, and Robbie then going as well to another catch. Eventually the innings petered out, however Chris played some good shots and the final few wickets fell before the end of the 41st over.

Plenty to learn for the 3rds and the new skipper, but many thanks for a good game played in a good spirit.

Cancelled - waterlogged ground

On a cold, overcast Saturday afternoon Carlton 3’s welcomed Murrayfield DAFS to Peffermill. With a strong looking line up we were confident that we could claim our first win of the 2013 season. Having lost the toss Carlton 3’s were asked to bat with Feds and Ani opening. Both players started methodically with Feds playing some nice drives. Ani was the first to depart after being well caught down the leg side by the DAFS wicketkeeper. This brought Craig Marshall to the crease and he and Feds began to build a solid partnership that was needed after losing an early wicket. Craig had reached 20, playing shots all around the ground before he was trapped LBW from a good ball by Finlay Ross.

Unfortunately for DAFS this brought Ross Burns to the crease and he and Feds began another partnership. With Feds playing the supporting role and scoring off the bad balls and Ross hitting boundaries at a regular rate, our score started to increase and a healthy total was looking a great possibility. Feds finally fell only 5 short of his 50, unfortunately playing on. With Ross still at the crease Carlton were still confident of scoring 200 plus. Having brought up his 50 Ross started to up his strike rate and was racing towards his century. A great piece of honesty, firstly by Ross when he walked after edging behind, but then by the DAFS keeper who told him it had hit the ground first, kept him at the crease. Ross was not to be denied and despite wickets falling around him he brought up his century in great style hitting the opening bowler for 6. Carlton finished on 223 for 7 off 45 overs, a total that we felt we could defend.

After another fantastic tea laid out by Feds’ mum, Carlton took to the field and opened up with Thomas and DC and with accurate bowling had the DAFS boys behind the run rate. DC took the first wicket as he fooled the batsmen to come dancing down the wicket, only for him to miss and see his wicket fall. Tom was bowling good areas and was unlucky not to take a wicket, especially with a couple of shots flying over the slips. He finished his spell with 0-21 off 7 which was a great start. At the other end DC bowled his 9 overs on the bounce and finished his spell in the best possible way with Craig taking a good catch that was swirling in the wind. Angus and Ollie then came on to bowl and continued to restrict the DAFS batsmen. Angus bowled extremely well and was also unlucky not to take a wicket, especially when the batsmen offered a return catch that he will take once he gains a few inches.

At the other end, Ollie was getting into her stride taking the first of her 5 wickets by enticing the opening batsmen who had dug in and played some nice shots, to chip the ball to DC. Amit had replaced Angus and he bowled brilliantly well taking 3 for 10 clean bowling two of the batsmen and trapping the other leg before. Ollie was continuing to bowl in troublesome areas for the batsmen and she kept taking wickets that her bowling deserved. It was only fitting that Ollie took the final wicket as Ani took a good catch running to his left. Ollie finished with great figures 5-41 off 8.1 overs. DAFS were all out for 125 meaning that the 3s were up and running with the first win on the board. All the bowlers were backed up magnificently with a great display in the field. Special mention must go to Shuaib who was throwing himself all over the place as the ball seemed to follow him wherever he was fielding. Also a mention must go to DC for an athletic piece of fielding on the boundary, running round and sliding on his knees to stop the ball and save a boundary. Thank you very much to DAFS for a good game, played in very good spirits. Hopefully the weather is better for the return fixture!

Zaki reports ...

On an overcast Sunday, Carlton 3rds welcomed Boroughmuir to Grange Loan. With a young but strong team we were confident we could get our second win of the season. The wicket looked very tasty so whoever won the toss probably would opt to bat so our faith was in Fed to win the toss which he proved useless at.

So we bowled first, opening up with Craig and Sam. Craig bowled exceptionally well and was very unfortunate not to pick up any wickets. Sam was equally good from the other end, pitching the ball up and getting plenty of swing and just as the opening batsmen looked set he struck. DC came on first change and after a few loose balls was accurate as always. The stars though were Angus and Ruairidh with 7 wickets between them. We eventually got them all out for 204 runs off 43 overs. Overall it was a very solid bowling and fielding performance and I never thought I would say this but Fed kept ok with only 7 byes. Boroughmuir finished on 204 all out.

Then came every cricketer’s favourite part of a match, tea, which was boss! Sadly tea was short and we had to turn our attention to batting and on this wicket 204 was very much in reach. So things didn't go to plan at the start of our innings, Ani getting triggered by DC. This however brought Craig to the crease and with a variety of powerful shots got to fifty swiftly but was then dismissed by a catch on the boundary that I'm sure that many didn't see coming. *cough*.

Some other dude batted alright too, he didn't run anybody out or get out with only 27 runs to win. Or did he? In fact that batsman, whose name I can't remember, got caught playing a terrible shot, therefore the responsibility was on Fed to take us home. In the end however it came to 7 to win off the last ball with Fed on strike so the best we could hope for was a 6 to tie but the big shot that we would expect did not come, Fed instead played for his average and nudged a single. Good one Fed. Carlton finished on 199 for 6.

A very competitive and enjoyable match with only 5 runs the difference between the teams.

Ferg reports ...

Unlike in seasons gone by the month of June started with a glorious day. The sun was shining and a young Carlton team left Grange Loan looking forward to a great day’s cricket. The 10:30 meeting time was clearly a little premature as we arrived at the sun drenched Broomhall almost an hour and a half before the scheduled start time. This gave captain Fed the opportunity to put his youthful team through a lengthy warm up, which didn’t go down too well with the elder statesmen of the side whose usual warm ups in university cricket are a run to the front of the queue at the Forfar Macdonald’s. With the far more rested looking Broomhall team watching on, Carlton went about a vigorous warm up which wasn’t needed on such a tropical afternoon.

The moment had come for the skipper to gain the first body blow of the day, however true to form the aforementioned Fedenczuk left with his tail between his legs following yet another loss of the toss. Broomhall chose to bat on what looked a green deck but, obviously favouring home conditions, clearly knew what they were doing. The Broomhall openers started very circumspectly with “Gary” playing a lot of ‘very’ forward defensives and the scoring went at a snail’s pace, the slow run rate was also contributed to by an excellent opening spell from both Dougal and Sam who both bowled very accurately. Captain Fed, though thin on top, was not light on ideas and tossed the ball to promising leg spinner and younger brother of Dougal, Ruairidh Main. Landing the ball well and giving it good revs he soon removed the opener James for a modest 23, leaving Broomhall 37 for 1 and going nowhere fast.

Calum Everett was at the same time bowling one of the most controlled spells of swing bowling the 3s had seen this season, going for just 2 runs in his 5 over spell. This pressure mounted and the experienced Broomhall batsman J. Grant started playing his shots and offering a difficult chance to Shuaib in the covers. From this point onwards Grant dominated the scoring passing “Gary” in the runs column with ease. Drinks came and went and Fed's head was spinning, as was the pitch, which brought about the introduction of arguably the biggest turner of the ball outside of the subcontinent. That’s right, the man mount had returned from his stint of ‘Studying’ in the north and was ready to wreak havoc in the east league. Sadly he got pumped. But a change of ends did the trick, eventually removing J. Grant for a swashbuckling 109. ‘Gary’ soon followed to another stumping by Fed from the bowling of Ferg.

The overs were tight at the end despite Dougal bowling a head high full toss which was pulled for an almighty 6! Broomhall finished on 229-5 with Calum taking two wickets in the last two balls, leaving him on a hat trick the next time he bowls.

After a cracking tea in the afternoon sun, Fed and Ani strode to the wicket with an air of confidence. However, after 5 airy wafts at the ball Fed chipped a leg stump half volley straight to mid-off for a duck. Ani on the other hand had no issues dispatching his first ball over square leg for and almighty 6! Calum and Ani set about their uphill task, however Calum missed a Yorker and was bowled for 3. This brought an in form Zaki to the crease and he and Ani made hay with the sun out as the pair regularly peppered the boundary. This good form did not last as long as the Carlton faithful wanted as both Ani and Zaki fell in quick succession bringing the giant pairing of Chris Paterson and Fergus Whatley to the crease. These likely lads set about their task with gay abandon as they ran well between the wickets and smoked the bad balls to the boundary meaning that Carlton kept up with the required run rate.

Sadly Chris fell to some devilishly slow bowling for a well compiled 30. After Olivia Rae was given out caught behind, Dougal strode to the crease and he and Ferg went about keeping up with the rate with fine stroke play and running between the wickets. Sadly Ferg’s innings came to an end with a top edge that ballooned to the keeper. A well compiled 44 but this really exposed Carlton's tail to the Broomhall attack. Shuaib offered little resistance swinging wildly at a straight one. This brought Main junior to the crease. It appeared that the years of getting mum and dad to bowl at the pair in the garden or hallway had paid off with the Main boys scoring freely, however the required run rate had spiralled and Dougal eventually dragged onto his stumps for a very promising 19.

The next target was to get above 170 for the batting point, which was something Fed was keen to stress to the youngsters. Confidence was low with an under the weather Sam Marchbank coming out to bat at 11, however the very short pair of R. Main and S. Marchbank showed why a century had been scored on this wicket earlier in the day and the two went after the ageing attack striking the old ball cleanly. Our 45 overs were up and Carlton made exactly 175 for 9, sadly falling short of the Broomhall total but there were many memorable moments at our big day at Broomhall. We look forward to a winning return to Grange Loan this Sunday. Fingers crossed for a sun drenched afternoon of good cricket and Ani’s polished guns on show.

We arrived at a very cold and windy Peffermill and so spent the time left for warm ups sat in the dressing rooms and waiting for Fed to return from the toss. Which he lost. Kirk Brae put us in and Neil and Ani opened to a decent bowling attack. Ani was unfortunate to receive an unplayable ball which bowled him for 16.

Wickets then fell regularly with Neil, Zaki, Ferg, Leigh and Ollie all falling for straight bowling, either bowled or LBW. Fed was caught trying to smash a bowl out the park, only succeded in top edging it to fine-leg. Amit was caught LBW too and after a good straight shot for 4, Tom chipped one back to the bowler. Under 15s Sam and Dougal rescued the innings with a fine partnership, batting through until the 36th over until Dougal decided to give catching practice to the slips. Carlton finished on 130, which although not a great total, was still better than what it looked like it was going to be and it was still defendable.

After an amazing tea, Carlton took to the field. Tom and Amit opened the bowling and after a few tight overs Tom got the break-through with a great bit of cricket, softening him up with a blow to the midriff before inducing the mishit off a bouncer which chipped up off to the safe hands of Ferg in slip. Amit got the second break-through, bowling number three for a duck. However, Kirk Brae dug in and pushed closer to the total. The game could have gone either way when Leigh and Sam got out the two “in” batsmen but Kirk Brae took it away from us with a few massive sixes.

Tom reports ...

To quote the usual suspects, ‘the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was to convince the world he did not exist.’ Carlton 3s through the first half of the season have shown only glimpses of the wickedness of their talent, so many opponents will believe that mistakes will go unpunished.

Wielding the mighty hammer of obfuscation the bowling attack prepared to seduce the wicket through wonder balls and extras, with the magical syncopation of SMRH bats dictating an uncomfortable beat for the Carlton field. An early breakthrough and beacon of hope was delivered by dangerously handsome Thomas Ziolkowski and Ani Majumdar, with a ball peeling away from the edge of the openers bat into the weathered hands of Ani, sending the batsman back to the pavilion with two runs to his name. Fate however, is wonderfully cruel. SMRH’s Coulthard and Hannam played beautifully, toying with the field, ambitious runs and well timed strokes taking the batsmen to 77 and 58 respectively.

Special mentions must be made to note the contributions of Messrs Murray and Kennedy. Keith Murray acted with reckless disregard for his own well being, shielding the entire field behind him from the barrage of balls hit in his direction with the longest of barriers. He ran, nay, glided up the hill and took a catch that was only surpassed in its importance by its spectacularity. Mike Kennedy, like Atlas before him, carried the weight of the world on his shoulders. He took 3 wickets from 9 overs of solid work, and countless appeals. J.Brock and E.Xtras added a nifty 34 and 45.

Brave Carlton, led by skipper Neil Kirk and occasional keeper Keshav Arvind took to the middle with a mighty mountain of runs to climb. Through 20 overs Carlton had the upper hand, without loss of wicket and equal run rate. Neil Kirk (below) scored 58, leading as a captain and as an opening bat. The third team prays that this diamond is not discovered by the second team. Keshav Arvind scored 36 after 45 overs of keeping and has a delightful average of 44.5 against top of the league SMRH.

Ani came in with a job to do and battled against the overs, pushing the run rate ever onward toward infinity. With 27 runs he was caught playing an attacking shot, that was necessary and unlucky. Below Ani the restless bats drummed the clubhouse floor, eager to show that they too can score big and win big and triumph. Three bowlers, Augustine, Ramesetti and Hannam were exceptional, and too good for the middle and bottom order. They combined for 7 wickets and 70 runs from 27 overs.

The symbol of the third team is the phoenix, from the ashes of defeat rising in glory to proudly battle again.

Summer had truly arrived, the sun was shining and a struggling Carlton Third XI headed for the Borders in search of a change of fortune.

Carlton were treated to a very picturesque village green on arrival to Kelso, which was the setting for an excellent encounter. A sun drenched ground with a lightning fast outfield and a lovely deck; it was another great toss to lose for Fed. Kelso elected to bat on a pitch which would remain true all day and Carlton started brilliantly with the silver fox Thomas Ziolkowski bowling Kelso’s promising young opener around his legs. This set the tone as Thomas and young Olly Brown opened up very well, bowling with great control. Olly got the wicket of the dangerous number three. This set the tone for the rest of the Kelso innings as impatient batting and very controlled bowling from Mike Kennedy (after he had the ball lost off of his bowling) and the returning messiah Tom Barrett put the visitors in control. Both got their rewards with Tom picking up 4 for 14 and Mike taking 2 for not many either. Ani’s wheels cleaned up the tail, and with no Kelso batsmen making it past 18, Carlton were set the task of chasing 98 to win.

On the day of the Wimbledon’s women’s final and the day the Welsh Lions won a series in Australia the people of Kelso treated us to a fantastic tea, offering a season highlight of Eton mess which was gleefully wolfed down by all.

Having filled our boots, the second coming of Barrett set about chasing a small but none the less reasonable total with Carlton’s in-form junior Keshav Arvind. Both set about the chase with great stroke making and excellent running between the wickets. Keshav eventually fell for a well-made 13, and out went Zaki keen to make hay while the sun was out. The Watson’s old boy reunion proceeded to smoke the Kelso bowling to all corners of the park making the run chase look very easy with Zaki and Tom effortlessly striking the Kelso seamers about with gay abandon. Zaki gave his wicket away with Carlton only needing 9 to win. This brought debutant Stu to the crease; his debut didn’t go as well as hoped as he nicked off for 2 and caused commotion as Ani refused to believe either Ferg or Fed as they told him he needed to get out to bat. Eventually he made his way out but he didn’t need to be there for long as Tom carved the ball over the slips to bring up his half century and take Carlton over the line.

A seven wicket win and this could be a real turning point in the season which up to now had been turning rather sour.

A young Carlton 3rd XI team learned an important lesson about the difference between loving winning and loving cricket on Saturday. We must always enjoy cricket. We were spoiled as Scottish cricketers, we played in the sun, and we must be grateful, regardless of the outcome. We, the lucky few who get to play and wear the proud Carlton whites only do a disservice to our team when we stop trying or complain, or feel hard done by when lucky enough to be chosen.

Absolute congratulations and respect must be given to Livingston who played wonderfully in both innings. They were gracious in their triumph, in their support of their record scoring batsmen J Sohail (178*) and as always played a game in the best of spirits. Instead of a blow by blow account with colorful language, this reporter will only admire what Livingston did. The opening bats showed the runs that were available on the lightning fast outfield and the invariable bounce of the artificial pitch. They both were out playing loose shots, and the dangerous Crichton was dismissed for only 6. Carlton were in a strong position early, but the outfield and competition proved too much. S Asghar and J Sohail played unbelievably well. They saw off eight bowlers and played shots with such perspicaciousness they seemed to be clairvoyant. No slower ball, beamer or all around kitchen-sink garbage bowling could offset their rhythm. The wicket of Asghar (which sounds quite Lord of the Rings-esque) fell to Callum Sibley. When Asghar the tormentor was dismissed for 72, Wilcox came in and assumed the position of Wonder-Bro, lifting and supporting Sohail with an unbeaten 43.

Sibley and Edwards Jr. deserve special mentions here. Edwards was the best bowler of the day by far. He bowled his full nine overs, took half the teams wickets (two) and had the best economy. Sibley deserves mention because he had the most admirable attitude. Facing incredible batting he was hit hard, though he did force awkward footwork and two shots played off the batsmen’s gloves. The incredible thing though, is that he did not allow his performance to dip in the field or bowling. He worked harder than anyone by far. He hustled on every ball that came in his direction, and he bowled four overs getting an LBW. He set the example and played the right way the whole game.

After a tea of limited eye contact, toilet breaks and frank discussion, Carlton padded up and faced their abusers. Edwards Sr. and Simpson went out to the middle to face the rather pacey S Asghar and neat and tidy H Ahmed. Edwards was caught by keeper Crichton, after playing some excellent shots. He may have been hindered by a painful looking leg injury from the field, but he made way for Zaki Yusaf. Zaki scored very quickly and very well. He played some stunning shots and with Barker (who LOVES coming down the pitch) got Carlton to 100 runs very quickly. Ahead of the run rate, Barker and Yusaf got out in quick succession for 42 and 53, and Carlton did not have the depth to continue. With batting points in sight and mind only Edwards Jr (that name again) made a good contribution below number four with 22. Agonizingly close to batting points at 164 T Ziolkowski was responsible for a foolish call and the wicket of his teammate A Garg. Ziolkowski proves that beautiful hair, cheekbones and voice do not make for genius.

This is the Carlton match report, but really the story belongs to the entire Livingston team, to Sohail, Asghar and Wilcox, who turned the game into a lesson of how to enjoy cricket and how to win. Carlton will have to dig deep and learn from Callum Sibley’s example to turn things around.

Angus reports ...

On a bright, sunny Sunday, the 3s travelled to Roseburn Park to play Murrayfield DAFS, hoping to repeat their success from the earlier fixture. Stand-in captain Ferg tossed up and, in a manner Fed would be proud of, lost. He was asked to field on an astro wicket with a lightning quick outfield.

Dougal and Tom Z opened the bowling with Tom removing the opener on the first ball of the second over, a hard chance at cover taken by Stu. Batsmen no. 2 and 3 then built a partnership, not helped by a dropped catch, before the other opener was out LBW just shy of his fifty by Angus. Ferg then dismissed the “in” batsman after reaching his half century, with a sharp stumping from Tom S. A flurry of wickets followed, all catches or run outs, though with a few dropped catches, missed run-outs and leaked boundaries in the process. Murrayfield finished on 234-9, a large but achievable total for Carlton to chase.

After an excellent tea, Carlton set about their run chase. Nathan and Tom S opened and got off to a slow start, finding runs hard to come by. Nathan was run out after a mis-field and Zaki and Tom followed in quick succession, both nicking one behind. Stu and Ani steadied the innings before Stu was taken by a one-handed catch on the boundary. Dougal provided support as Ani reached his half-century, before being bowled for 52. Ferg made a very useful 36, including a massive 6 hit into the Murrayfield Stadium. He and Dougal were both bowled with the run rate now above 10 an over. Needing 36 to win off the final over, Angus was bowled attempting a ramp shot, and DC, playing for his average, blocked out the final 3 balls leaving Tom Z unbeaten on 25.

In the end Carlton had made a brave attempt at chasing a total that was perhaps 30 runs too high, with the team left thinking about their untidiness in the field. Thanks to Murrayfield DAFS for an enjoyable match.

Matt C reports ...

Carlton 3rd XI went into their final game against Kirk Brae knowing that a win would secure Division 3 status for another season.

With the side boasting a strong all round look, stand in Captain Crowther won the toss and chose to bat on what was a green-top at Double Hedges.

Keshav Arvind, and Ani Majumdar strode out to the crease for the start of play, accompanied by the 10 Kirk Brae fielders. Opening bowler Saleem hit the ground running, dismissing Keshav with the first ball of the day after disrupting the opener's off stump after a thick inside edge.

That brought the ever happy Zaki to the crease and he scored a confident 18 before giving a catch to a thankful Kirk Brae fielder with the score now ticking along nicely.  That brought wicket keeper Matt Wells to the crease at 4 with Majumdar who was batting aggressively at the other end.

 
Wells made up for ‘Beergate’ last week and batted superbly – defending, driving, pulling and cutting through the mid-wicket area, pouncing on opportunities offered by the Kirk Brae bowlers. By this time Majumdar had bought up a very well made 50 on his final Carlton appearance and looked well set to make a big score.

After 20 overs Carlton were scoring at well over a run a ball – a big score was on the horizon. Majumdar continued to score freely and played all round the wicket and brought up a fantastic hundred with 9-iron chip over mid-off that landed 6 feet from the hole.

Wells continued to support Majumdar when he chipped a ball from Snow straight to the fielder and departed for a well made 79 and a partnership of exactly (according to the scorers!) 200 with Ani.  That brought Edwards to the crease who had made 3 before a calf-strain forced him to retire hurt meaning Coach Crowther strode the wicket. Coach picked his scoring areas and made a quick fire 44 before Ani was dismissed in the last over looking for his 200 – going for a brilliant 188. There was still time for Crowther to be dismissed and Whatley to caress a cover drive for 4 off his first ball – and the final ball of the innings.  A note must go to Kirk Brae bowler Snow who finished with figures of 10-1-25-1. Carlton  finished on 348-5 off 45 overs.

After a quick tea interval Carlton set about defending their mammoth total with openers Beattie and Ziolkowski taking the new ball. Zio bowled 7 overs in his spell, taking 4-16 with 2 maidens to all but end Kirk Brae’s hopes of victory by removing the top 4 Kirk Brae batsmen. After a long scoring stint earlier in the day, Nathan Pietsch was then amongst the action again with the ball taking 3-27 from his 8 overs – all 3 batters being caught behind the wicket where Cricket can be described as the genuine winner. Some fine catching from Whatley in the slips and Wells with the gloves.

As the game drew to a close there was only one real way to end the game and on came Majumdar with one Kirk Brae wicket required. Sure enough, Ani obliged and the final Kirk Brae batter was dismissed courtesy of a smart stumping by Wells – Majumdar finishing with 1-12 alongside his match winning knock of 188. Kirk Brae finished on 157 all out – Carlton winning by 191 runs and securing Division 3 status for the summer of 2014.

A final word on the man of the day. Ani will be sorely missed and it has been great to have him at Carlton over the past years and all at Carlton wish him well on his return to India and his continued career ambitions. Ani, if you ever end up in Edinburgh you know you will always be welcome inside the Carlton gates!
