65 all out
David Mitchell 3 for 18, Euan Everett 2 for 12, Greg Mitchell 2 for 21 |
Carlton batted first and lost Dougal and Euan early on before Haris and Ruari batted very well putting on 80 for the 3rd wicket. Haris scored 35 and Ruari was 44 not out at the end, both showing how much they have come on, playing controlled shots, hitting lots of boundaries and running well. Tim, batting at 5, helped take the score to 122 for 3 after the allotted 20 overs.
Gavin and Euan both bowled very good 4 over opening spells. Gavin 4 overs none for 9 and Euan 4 overs 2 for 12 bowling both batsmen. After Greg picked up a couple of middle order wickets,
David bowled well with good flight and some turn, picking up 3 for 18 from his 4 overs. Adam bowled 2 overs, 1 wicket for 3 and Patrick came on and took the last wicket in his first over, a good caught and bowled low down. Patrick also took another good catch and Adam a good runout to the right end in a mixup.
Part-time keeper Dougal picked up a smart stumping on an evening when spin twins Cheeky and Haris were only needed to bowl one over between them. An excellent start to the season.

57 for 1
Fraser Allardice 26* |
A young Penicuik side won the toss and batted first on a seamer's wicket and struggled from the start against accurate bowling from Euan and Gavin.
Thomas Hilton batted sensibly for Penicuik in the middle order top scoring with 19 being out in the penultimate over to Haris. Fraser Allardice bowled accurately early on taking 3 for 6 from his 4 overs and Chayank and Haris bowled tightly at the death taking 2 for 8 and 1 for 2 from their 3 overs finally dismissing Penicuik for 55.
Craig and Fraser opened against the challenging attack of Scott and Hilton. Both bowled well with Hilton in particular generating good pace and was rewarded with the wicket of Craig for 6.
Fraser and Haris continued their recent good form seeing off the opening bowlers before taking advantage of the change bowlers. Fraser ended up on 26 not out and Haris on 7 not out as they passed 55 in the 9th over.
Penicuik fought hard in the field and their young team will hopefully benefit from the experience of facing the older and more mature Carlton team. Thanks to Stephen Green for working hard to get his team together against the challenge of injuries and players missing with exams.

Another comprehensive win for Carlton, with the opportunity taken to shake things up. Cheeky opened the batting (and retired undefeated), and there were good knocks from Matt and Dougal.
In reply, Ruari donned the keeping gloves, Craig bowled bouncers, Haris reverted to his old seaming ways and Fraser & Matt attempted to bowl spin. It was the 'proper' bowlers, David and Gavin, who took the honours though as the visitors were dismissed for just 55.

Carlton batsmen struggled on a slow seaming wicket with none of the top order showing the patience to build an innings and adjust to the conditions. Several were caught driving early through midwicket area. No batsman worked it out that they needed to spend time at the middle on this type of wicket and to have wickets in the hand at the end to then put pressure on the bowlers. Carlton never got ahead in their innings with wickets falling at regular intervals.
Chayank stuck in well but did not see much of the strike at the end. Crucially at the end of the day the last 2 overs brought only 1 run!
Scotty bowled well into a very strong wind moving it around off the seam at medium pace, bowling Haris and Ruari with good deliveries.
Richard Adams batted well in the Penicuik innings and adjusted to the conditions as well as assessing that in chasing 80 if he batted for most of the innings then they would have a good chance of winning. He was dropped once which was crucial. He formed a good partnership with Simon Waite though tight bowling and good committed fielding by Carlton kept them behind the rate until the last 4 or 5 overs.
Some lusty blows by Richard in the last few overs got them back up with the rate and they finally won with a few balls to spare of the 20th over.
Penicuik played a few overage players within the rules but this at long last led to a challenging U15 match where hopefully both sets of players will have learnt something and where finally it gave me some areas/game situations to review and work on with my players.

Chayank Gosain 2 for 17 |
A thriling match between two evenly matched sides was decided on the penultimate ball.
After the early loss of Craig, the home side suffered a big blow with the run-out of the in-form Fraser. However, Haris took on the big Grange attack and was going well on 27 when he fell to a superb running catch from Will Edwards. It was left to Dougal to see Carlton past three figures with a good unbeaten 28.
A wicket in the first over gave Carlton hope when Ruari took
a good high running catch to get rid of Duncan Player off the bowling of Euan. Will Edwards got the scoreboard ticking before he fell to an excellent catch at long on from Gavin, to give Cheeky reward for a fine spell.
However, the big-hitting Crawley was taking control of the game for the visitors and the turning point came when he mistimed one up the hill, with the ball creeping just over the head of the waiting Fraser for 6. With 8 needed off the last over, Crawley expertly kept the strike to hit four twos and win the match for Grange.

115 for 3
Haris Aslam 29*, Euan Everett 22 |
Euan Everett batted and ran well (22) and put on 59 for the first wicket in 11 overs with Fraser (19)., Haris was solid (29 no) and Matt (16no) ran well and scored a few in the last 4 overs. A total of 115 for 3 was reasonable but we should have scored more on a really good hard batting wicket at Goldenacre.
Adam bowled 2 fine overs for just 8 and Greg bowled tidily to pick up 2 wickets from his 4 overs. Mitchy bowled well again at the end when the hit was on with everything well flighted up to the bat. Cheeky ended with 3 wickets for 16.
Craig ran out the home side's best batsmen Chris Acheson, who was going well on 23, which got us back on track and we eventually ran out winners by 14 runs. |

Gavin and David bowled well and knocked over the vistors' top line batsmen and the rest of their inexperienced lineup struggled to recover.
Dougal batted well getting team off to a solid start in chasing just 50. the team batted on with Euan blasting away against some wayward bowling.

Adam Hook and Sam Galloway got wickets and bowled well on their A team debuts. SMRH batted positively and went off at a good rate but kept losing wickets. Conditions were wet but both lots of players stuck at it well and we were glad to get the full game in.
A good opening partnership of over 50 between Dougal Balfour and Tim Harvey in chasing the 80 to win. |

A good win in the end for a tired team who looked in need of the school holidays!
Craig and Haris opened the batting but found scoring difficult in the face of some tight bowling. Nevertheless they gave Carlton a solid start before an enterprising partnership at the end from Ruari and Euan took their side past three figures, showing the value of keeping wickets in hand.
A loose start to the bowling was sorted with the introduction of Haris, who took the crucial first wicket, ending with 3 for 15 off his four overs. Young Calum Everett then bowled a spell of immaculate line and length to return figures of 4.1.11.1.
The game was then sealed when Mitch returned for a second spell, picking up a wicket with his first ball before ending the game with a hat-trick in his final over!
