With three of our top six batters unavailable (Tom skippering East Under 12s, Olly down south and Dougal succumbing to a virus) our Under 13s faced a daunting start to the season in this Scottish Cup tie.
Just how daunting soon became clear, as the fiery Grange attack found the bouncy artificial very much to their liking. With three tall fast bowlers, another impressive seamer and a couple of handy spinners there can rarely have been a more potent under 13 bowling attack. Keshav did his best to hang around before losing his middle stump, and Calum counterattacked for a beligerent 11 before one got big on him and he cut to point. Skipper Rory went the same way and it was left to debutant Zaid to hang around and give the home side something to defend.
Despite a superb effort in the field (fielding coach Duncan was struggling to see any areas to improve on this showing), Grange eventually knocked off the runs for the loss of two wickets, the second falling to a stunning caught and bowled by Rory, who also led the side excellently.
Lots of positives for this young Carlton side, but their opponents will surely take some stopping in this year's tournament. |

Carlton won the toss and batted. Openers Ollie B and Keshav put on 44 in 6 overs before Ollie retired on 30.
Keshav was run out for 11 as a result of a direct hit by the fielder and was replaced by skipper Rory. Calum E and Rory then enjoyed a partnership of 67 before Calum reached 32 with a boundary off his legs (just as his father turned up to support), replaced by Callum W. Rory reached his 33 with a straight drive to the boundary and was replaced by Harry who hit a couple of good shots before being caught for 7. Tom D came in and he and Callum both finished undefeated on 7. 146 for 2 off 20 overs.
Sam opened the bowling for Carlton and although he didn't take any wickets set the tone for those to follow with good straight bowling. Angus was the other opener and clean bowled one of the openers 4th ball (his Dad turned up 5 minutes later!) Their No.1 and 3 then set about the bowling a bit and moved the score onto 34 in the 5th over before a good catch by Keshav off the final ball of Callum S's first over removed the other opener.
Zaid showed good pace and although the No.3 connected with a few in his first over, Zaid had his revenge in his second over, clean bowling what turned out to be the last dangerous batsman in a wicket maiden.
Tom and Calum E then combined to restrict Heriots to 7 runs over the next 4 overs, both bowlers picking up a wicket in the process. If Tom and Calum had been economical then Harry and Keshav were miserely, with just 3 runs off 3 overs, and 3 wickets (2 to Harry).
With Heriots having been reduced to 10 players during their fielding innings (a well struck shot connecting with the bowler's shoulder requiring a trip to the Western General for unfortunate bowler - no fracture, just some bruising according the X Ray) Callum W came on for his first over and took the final wicket with his 5th ball.
Carlton Bowling:
Sam 2-0-10-0
Angus 2-0-18-1
Callum S 2-0-8-1
Zaid 2-1-8-1
Tom D 2-0-2-1
Calum E 2-1-5-1
Harry 2-1-2-2
Keshav 1-0-1-1

A very inexperienced SMRH bowling attack found the going tough at Grange Loan. The Carlton skipper was the only batsman to get out; so startled to receive a straight ball that he played all around it. A succession of batsman helped themselves to runs, while the rest of the team shivered on the sidelines, as the home side posted an improbable 153 for 1 off their 20 overs.
With conditions moving from unpleasant to horrible, the game continued and the visitors proved themselves more adept with bat than ball. Rory gave all his bowlers 2 overs each in an attempt to keep everyone warm as SMRH battled gamely to 88 for 3.
Roll on the summer.

A real thriller at Grange Loan on, for once, a decent summer's evening.
The Carlton top three had all clearly been glued to the IPL for the last few weeks because they appeared to be hungry for boundaries from the off. Sadly, only Olly had enough good fortune and hitting power to carry this off and we were soon 2 down for not very many.
Hoewever, sanity was soon restored in the form of young Tom and the contrasting partnership took us towards a good total before Olly retired unbeaten. Calum kept the tempo up well before eventually perishing and Keshav and Tom put together a good partnership to take us beyond three figures.
The opening bowling attack of Harry and Kamran looked formidable and Harry deservedly picked up the first wicket, before Dougal collected the second with a brilliant direct hit as the batsmen tried to steal a run during another tight Kamran over. Another run out courtesy of the ever-sharp Charlie then had Watsonians under pressure.
Charlie then took over and delivered a fine spell that deserved a wicket. Unfortunately he saw two tough chances go down in the field. Joseph, however, crowned an accurate spell with a clean bowled.
With the match turning the way of the visitors, skipper Rory turned to seamers Calum and Olly, and it was young Calum who turned the match on its head with three wickets in his dramatic first over. With nerves jangling, Rory then took the ball to pick up the last two wickets - the final one a fine catch from keeper Keshav that sparked loud celebrations in the middle.
A great game between two top sides and a fine advert for Under 13 cricket.
The trouble with this Carlton side is that we have 11 all-rounders. How to keep them all involved? Let's try a change in batting order next week ...

A game of two halves.
A combination of excellent bowling from the home side, a bit of an inferiority complex from the visitors and some less than clever batting meant Carlton struggled to an under par 68 all out.
There was a lot to be positive about in the reply though as Carlton bowled (with Harry, in particular, delivering a fine, accurate spell) and fielded extremely well, ensuring Grange had to battle all the way, reaching their target in the penultimate over.

U13s win another nail biting finish.
Batting first after weathering the opening bowler (2 straight maidens) Oliver B set about the others, reaching his 30 to be replaced by Calum E who all too soon returned (caught) to be replaced by Joseph. Meanwhile at the other end Tom D kept nudging the singles to keep the score moving, going for 9 when he was caught. Rory had a brief innings (9 before also being caught). Dougal joined Joseph and between them they guided the score beyond 100 when Joseph retired on 32 after 2 lusty pulls to the boundary. Charlie came in for the final couple of overs and finished unbeaten on 2 with Dougal still there on 17. 108 was a decent score.
The W Lothian openers set off like trains, with Kamran and Alex the unlucky bowlers. A good runout removed one of the openers but his replacement carried on and after 4 overs 37 were on the board. Calum E and Rory came on as first change pair and slowed the rate down with Calum getting a deserved wicket shortly after their main strike batsman had retired. Keshav was very frugal 4-0-4-2 which meant there was greater desperation in the batters and a series of runouts (4 in the innings) as they tried to press. Good fielding all round and a solid keeping performance by Olly who stopped most things down the leg side and took a good catch that side as well. Oliver Fenton bowled 4 tight overs with some real pace and ended with 4-2-14-2. The final 2 overs were left to Charlie and Tom, with 20 for a visitor’s victory and only 2 wickets remaining Carlton looked favourites but some strong hitting and some extras leaked dropped it to 8 required in the final over with 1 wicket standing. All fielders to the ropes and good straight bowling by Tom allowed them to pick up 4 singles and as they dashed for a quick single there was the final runout.
It's always dramatic...

This was much more like it. Some proper batting at the start and some sensible acceleration at the end took Carlton to an excellent 133 for 3 off their 20 overs. Despite the early loss of Olly, Keshav and Harry got things off to a fine start. Keshav looked in top form, striking the ball elegantly, while Harry looked determined to make the most of his overdue move up the order.
After Harry played round a straight one attempting to up the run rate, skipper Rory took to the crease and from the outset looked more like his old self, limiting himself to proper cricket shots as he and Keshav both moved to retiral.
An entertaining cameo from Calum was cut short thanks to a good catch from guest sub fielder Olly B at square leg. That Carlton soared past 133 owed much to an enterprising partnership between Tom D and Joseph - Tom dropping and running while Joseph middled a few lusty blows.
There were also a few lusty blows from the visitors though and at 70 for 2 the game looked in the balance. Enter Tom D who breached the defences of the enterprising Boyes for a fine 24. Thereafter, the skipper was able to share the bowling around, with Oliver F (1/15), Dougal (1/5), Calum (1/6), Keshav (1/9) and Rory himself (1/1) all in the wickets.
This was the last game before the school holidays and we should see the side freshened up on a weekly basis as the league continues.

A ruthless performance from Carlton saw them hand out a second crishing defeat of the season to SMRH. Disciplined batting from Rory, Keshav and Tom saw them all to maximum 30s as their side fell just short of their total earlier in the season.
Last time out the SMRH batters put up a good fight but this time they were blown away by a strong bowling and fielding performance with wickets shared around as Carlton notched up a 120 run win.

On a mercifully dry evening following yet another wet Monday, this match against old rivals Grange turned into a real classic.
The Carlton under 13 skipper always faces a tough task as he's inevitably asked to make sure that everybody is fully involved - at the same time as trying to win! Rory Allardice, fresh from his starring role in the senior 4th XI victory the previous day, has proved to be the ideal skipper this year and he managed to use 9 of his 10(!) available bowlers while still managing to contain Grange to 100 exactly. Typical of Rory the only bowler who remained unused was himself.
The skipper, delighted with the bowling and fielding of his side, opened the batting with Keshav but was soon back on the sidelines having picked out one of many fine Grange fielders. With Dougal soon adjudged lbw, it was left to Keshav to keep Carlton up with the run rate and he did so with a beautifully controlled innings, mixing solid defence with confident strokeplay. After Keshav retired unbeaten, Carlton were indebted to an excellent partnership between Calum and Harry. Both played patient innings, waiting for the rare bad ball to put away. Harry played one of his finest innings for Carlton, hitting over the top whenever the opportunity presented itself.
However, with the pressure increasing and overs running out both Harry and Calum perished, leaving the lower order to find a way home. Alex and Callum S contributed well to take Carlton to the brink of victory. With two needed off two balls, Zaid managed one but ran out Callum looking for a second. Oliver F was on strike for the final ball and he ran a scrambled leg bye to seal an exciting win.

The hosts managed to post 88 off their 20 overs, thanks in part to no fewer than 31 extras! Alex and Harry were the pick of the bowlers with economical spells, with Alex also picking up a couple of wickets.
Keshav played a captain's innnings and Harry continued his excellent form with the bat to have Carlton on easy street at 60 odd for none, but after Keshav and Harry's departures there was a collapse of epic proportions before the visitors crawled over the finishing line to win by 2 wickets.

The U13 A's recorded an exceptionally professional win when they came up against Watsonians.
Rory lost the toss and we were made to field on a green and old pitch that looked like it would help the bowlers throughout. Callum Sibley bowled a tidy opening spell as did Oli Fenton who was near enough unplayable as he hit the right areas throughout his spell. Watsonians scored slowly throughout their 20 overs with tight bowling from Charlie Kidd and Rory Allardice who bowled good spells to restrict the opposition to 72-7 after 20 overs including 2 good runouts. Tom Simpson kept well behind the sticks and took some good takes down the leg side.
Keshav and Dougal opened the innings for us and started off tentatively as they were slightly caught out by the lack of bounce and pace of the Watsonian bowlers. However they carried on and started to get into their stride, especially Dougal who played some very nice cut shots and managed to clear the field on the leg side well to score 31*.
Keshav was slightly slower in his scoring rate but managed to anchor the innings and finish on 29* with Rory only facing one ball at the end. A thoroughly convincing win over a decent Watsonian side, which was very pleasing after all the close games we have had recently!

A fine September morning, but a heavy dew had affected the pitch. So, many thanks to Moon and the Carlton CC members for their sterling efforts in preparing the pitch and outfield to enable the match to start. Much appreciated.
You know, as this season has turned out, I've only seen this side twice - their first match of the season and this, the last. Both against Grange and both losses. But there the comparison ends, as there has been tremendous improvement in our batting and bowling in the intervening months - so well done to all the lads and coaches Nik and Steve.
On to this match, and as Fantasy Bob might report, Rory lost the toss - narrowly - and Carlton batted on a 'drying' wicket. In difficult conditions Keeshav & Dougal impressed as opening batsmen, showing good technique and concentration against the fine Grange bowling attack.
As we pressed on to put some runs on the scoreboard towards halfway, we did lose some wickets but Dougal, Rory and Harry posted valuable totals as we made 78 in our 20 overs. We'd have liked around 10-15 more, but the early conditions and the excellent Grange seam and spin attack thwarted our aim.
So, with the conditions much more favourable, Grange opening batsmen set about our bowlers. But Oliver F & Callum did not make things easy for the opposition, impressing with some fine, though wicketless seam bowling in the opening few overs.
Rory was anxious to introduce his spin attack as soon as possible, and with Keeshav and himself bowling in tandem, Carlton threatened! Chances came and went, but the spinners took 3 wickets between them but alas their alloted overs were used up, and Rory had no more spinners to turn to. Dougal and Ollie B bowled well, but the Grange batsmen were able to put bat to ball, and the pace did the rest to bring the runs required.
Excellent game of cricket, with many impressive cricketers on both side - half of them still eligible next season. Our games against Grange are always fiercely contested, but of enormous benefit to the players of both clubs. We're already looking forward to next season's batch of games against our rivals.
