Oliver Fenton 24 |
With the match switched to the Meadows, the hosts arrived without any stumps and an emergency dash to Grange Loan was needed before the match could get underway.
The late start meant a 15 over a side thrash. The short-form of the game is tailor-made for Carlton opener Oliver Fenton and he proceeded to hit a vital 24 to get his side off to a good start. However, just as the innings was starting to gain momentum it was time to field.
Defending 71 against an older and wiser Edinburgh side was always going to be tough and, despite some excellent bowling and fielding at times, the Carlton youngsters eventually lost out by 8 wickets. Lots of promising performances nevertheless and it was great to get a game under our belts after the disappointment of the previous week.

A fine game between two well drilled and enthusiastic B sides went right to the wire at the Edinburgh Academy Junior School ground.
The Carlton opening pair of Oliver and Hari started well and they both picked up a wicket in their opening spell. With Charlie getting on on the act with a fine yorker and Ben pitching in with a sensational run-out the Watsonian youngsters were struggling. However an excellent fifth wicket partnership took the batting side into three figures before a devastating last over from Hari delivered two wickets ... and the final ball of the innings just missed the outside edge for what would have been a remarkable hat-trick. A top effort in the field with everyone involved and a fine keeping debut from young Tom.
Oliver (16) and Hari (15) got things off to a good start and, with debutant Alex (22) adding vital middle order runs, a tight finish looked on the cards. Charlie and skipper Joseph batted sensibly to nudge Carlton towards three figures. Three needed off the last over and Sam did well to give the strike to the in-form Tom. Three balls to go and Tom pulled one to the boundary and celebrated by whipping off his helmet and raising his bat in celebration. Great stuff and a fine way to end a match played in excellent spirit by both sides.
Carlton are grateful for the support of the Edinburgh Academy Junior School

Match abandoned - Rain
A treat for the Under 13Bs as they played a 'real' home match at Grange Loan. Batting first, they had use of the strip on which the 2nd XI scored 290 on Saturday and each batsman could track their individual score on the electronic scoreboard. As the Carlton top-scorer said: "How cool is that?"
Angus, fresh from his personal coaching session from the Nottinghamshire Outlaws, opened the batting with Tom and the dimunitive left-hander batted with his usual mixture of courage and sound technique against some accurate bowling before a quicker one finally breached his defences.
Calum then got the scoreboard moving with some aggressive hitting while Tom played the anchor role. The quickfire innings ended on 20 thanks to a sensational direct hit run-out. Bailey then played an entertaining cameo before Hari joined Tom, who was now playing with real fluency, to send the score soaring beyond the three figure mark.
Unfortunately for all concerned, just as the players were taking to the field for the second innings the heavens opened and the match had to be abandoned.
Nevertheless, an enjoyable evening for all concerned including the opposing umpire/coaches Messrs Kidd and Kidd. Finally, a big thank-you to Grange for putting a team together at such short notice and ensuring the opportunity for the boys to play at Grange Loan wasn't wasted. |

Ruairidh Main 14* |
Holiday commitments meant that an inexperienced side headed to Grange for this league fixture. Unfortunately, with one player failing to turn up we went into the game with just 10 men.
In the circumstances, the Carlton youngsters performed admirably in the field to restrict the home side to 109, with skipper Calum bowling particularly well, supported by Callum who picked up two wickets.
However, the batting was another story as a mightily impressive home attack took control. When the skipper holed out for 0, shortly after being struck on the helmet, the writing was on the wall. However, young Ruairidh batted very bravely and defied the Grange bowling to finish undefeated; the highlight of a very promising innings being a crashing one-bounce four.
