Straightforward victory for Carlton against a young, inexperienced Edinburgh CC XI on a hard, but rough pitch at Leith Academy.

Mo and Zaki faced the best of the Edinburgh attack, putting on 73 for the 1st wicket, before Zaki fell to a fine catch from a rasping off drive. Grigor joined Mo and the runs continued to flow with each posting half centuries, with Angus keeping up the momentum when Mo retired.

Edinburgh never looked comfortable against our pace attack of Neil, Steven, William and Gair, and newly converted off spinner Cameron pitched in with 3 tail-end wickets.

Top mention falls to Grigor with a direct hit (on the full, 1 stump to aim at) from the boundary to run out the hapless Edinburgh batsman.

It gets tougher from here!

Match abandoned

Frustratingly, with Carlton having sewn this game up, an incessant downpour put paid to this match. We hope to rearrange for another time during the season.

Anyway, with no fewer than 9 players unavailable, we delved into the pool of Andy’s U13 side for 5 cricketers to bolster this team. Carlton batted first with Zaki forcing the pace early on, and Kyle providing steady support throughout.  With 7 overs remaining, Grigor upped the pace and let loose with splendid strokemaking, and Saif provided fast running between the wickets when Kyle was run out with a couple of overs left, 119 being the lower end of our own target.

Steven and Grigor opened the bowling and Grigor soon had  the dangerous Kinghorn caught and bowled, but it was Steven who impressed in an excellent 4 overs spell. Our fielding was way short of our standard required, and this gifted Corstorphine a needless dozen runs or so. With Scotland opener Malik was still there on 34, the match was in the balance until Cheeky tempted him into a false shot and clean bowled him. The game was won when Meier was run out – both batsmen stranded at one end -  and Cheeky took another 2 clean-bowled, but then the heavens opened.

On a bright, warm summer's morning, Carlton batted first in this Scottish Cup 1st round tie.

Mo & Zaki opened but both fell in similar style, playing a bit early and offering catches in the covers. Saif departed soon after trying to force a rising ball, but William played a masterful innings of controlled strokemaking, plus fast running between the wickets. His partner Angus however, was not so appeciative of the fast running and set about the Kelso bowling with some power. His half century included six 4s & two 6s much to the delight of the crowd.

William went on to make a most accumplished half century, with good backup from Matthew. Carlton posted a target of 153 for Kelso to chase, which after blistering opening spells of fast bowling from Neil & Henry never looked on.

Henry bagged both openers in his first spell, and captured Kelso no. 3 Taylor late on for his 3 wickets. Angus dominated the batsmen picking up a couple of wickets, ably backed up by the seam of Steven at the other end. Mo and Fraser bowled a couple of tidy overs each, to round off a fine team performance.

With both teams fielding weakened sides due to exam commitments, Carlton suffered a further blow with the late injury and illness call-offs of opening bowlers Neil Irvine-Hess and Henry Lawrence. 12 year-old Euan Everett was drafted into the side but Carlton still went into the match with only 10 men.

Saif lost the toss and was asked to field. Wicket keeper Matthew Wells was pressed into service as an opening bowler and his fellow opener William started tidily. Watsonian opener Williams ended up with 55 before Chayank slowed things down but got no wickets. First wicket was a direct hit run out from Matt. Saif bowled well and got one (1-19); Angus got 2 (2-23) including danger man Cash for 16 - a good catch from Matt off a skier. Craig kept very well. Fielding was a bit less electric than it could have been, a couple of very hard catches went down which could have made all the difference. But only 9 extras were conceded, which was a great effort.

Light faded pretty badly when Carlton batted, but after losing Kyle quite cheaply to a leading edge, William and Saif batted well to take us into the 80's until William tried one quick single too many and was run out for a good 34. Still, 6 overs to go and 43 wanted seemed achievable. But Cash's bowling tied things down a bit. Angus was getting on top of things and finding the middle of the bat when he fell to a very smart catch at midwicket. Then the slope was getting steeper and while Matt pushed things on at more than a run a ball the big shot wouldn't come. When he was out off the last ball of the penultimate over it still left 10 to win. The big shot just wouldn't come and Carlton finished 4 runs short with Saif unbeaten on a very good 36.

So a close finish for the spectators to enjoy but frustration for the Carlton boys who didn't really do much to deserve to lose. A different story perhaps if we had had our full attack and being those 2 bowlers light probably made the difference.

Carlton were put into bat, but in the 2nd over Mo was unlucky enough to get a fine edge to the keeper off a very good ball from Crewe. Zaki struck  two 4s before lofting a drive to mid-off, so once again we looked to Will to provide to the runs. This excellent batsman made his second half-century of the season for us, ably supported by Steven and young Craig (who played a fine innings).

With our pace attack restored to fitness, Haddington’s opening batsmen struggled with the pace of our bowlers. On this occasion, Neil picked up a couple of clean-bowled, but Henry’s spell was excellent also.

Kyle & Fraser dismissed the dangerous Mann & Blades in identical c&b fashion, with Kyle going on to pick up 4 wickets in total. Excellent captaincy from  Mo (standing in for an injured Saif) ensured involvement from all players on a fine evening for cricket.

Carlton progressed to round 3 of the Scottish Cup at the expense of a young Gala team.

Carlton batted first, and although Kyle was run out in the first over, the medium paced Gala attack posed little threat to Saif and Mo. Nevertheless, the bowling remained accurate, and progress was steady until halfway. A fine 50 partnership was ended when Mo holed out to mid wicket. After some early scares, Cameron let loose with some powerful drives and his 48* included five 4s. Saif's batting is improving each week, and his 47* included four 4s. A very good 72 partnership with excellent running between the wickets.

In reply Gala were pinned down by our fine opening fast bowlers Henry & Neil, and there was no respite when the change bowlers were Cameron & Steven. Superb fast bowling from these four! Mo showed what an excellent all round cricketer he is by donning the gloves on this occasion and marking a competent display with a catch and a stumping. We have some very promising cricketers coming through, and 2 of those (Gair & Kyle) picked off the tail end with 5 wickets between them. Gair's short spell of left arm seam was immaculate and Kyle's leg spin is really coming on and he took his tally to 7 wickets in 3 days for our side

Carlton batted first on our fine artificial wicket, and Kyle & Zaki only had to “nudge & steer” the semi-fast medium Heriot's attack to progress at 8 an over. Heriot's wisely slowed down their attack, set a more defensive field and invited our batsmen to work harder for their runs. This had the desired effect, with Zaki playing across the line once too often and Kyle flashing an edge to the keeper. Nonetheless, our openers had put us into a winning position with a stand of 70 from 11 overs. Fine innings from both players.

Grigor then set about the bowling fiercely with six 4s in his 40, with Saif providing excellent support and quick running between the wickets.

With Angus taking position behind the stumps to make it 4 different keepers in as many games, Carlton always looked on top defending a massive total. Pacy bowling from our 4 main seamers – Neil, Henry, Steven & Cameron – pinned Heriot's down, but they all fell into the trap of bowling just short of a length, beating the bat but also the stumps!

Some fine blows from the Heriots’ middle order livened the game up a bit, and Saif picked up a couple of wickets. A fine 3 overs from Gair rounded things off for us and as well as winning this league match, we progress into the next round of the Lothian Cup where we meet either RH Corstorphine or Penicuik.

* At Meggetland

Phew, this was close.

On the artificial at Meggetland (the surface being the only comparison to Grange Loan), we batted first and the lads produced a magnificent performance of strokemaking, fielding pressure and running between the wickets. Grigor oozed class as always, and occasional spectators were surprised to see how much his on side play has improved. Seven 4s in his 41, and William played equally well in the face of very fine opening bowling. Every batsman contributed but the total was reached due to a swift knock of 17* off 13 balls from Kyle coming in at No. 7.

So 144 to defend, easy eh? Well it would have been but our bowlers (Saif & Gair aside) proceeded to give away 31 wides, and spill a simple catch early on. Scotland cap Farrar was the danger man and he quickly hit some massive blows (two 4s & two 6s) before Saif enticed him into 1 too many, Grigor picking up a rasping catch on the mid wicket boundary. This eased the pressure on our lads, but the wides were still mounting up at one end while Saif & Gair tied up the other. When Gair bowled Buchanan-Smith near the end, the game was won but not without some major worries along the way.

Our lads have to think about the strong mental attitude that is required to match their undoubted skills, and this is a must to progress further in this game.

Still, we have matched our U13s by reaching the Scottish Cup semis at Stirling on Sunday, a fine achievement for our club. But we’re not finished just yet.......

As we warmed up for the Scottish Cup finals on Sunday, this was the first home outing this season on the grass for our lads. Penicuik won the toss and chose to bat, and openers Connor and Harrison set about our opening attack of Neil and William with much purpose. 32 was notched up after 4 overs, as we paid the price for some poor length deliveries. However, Angus held a rasping catch off another short delivery from Neil to dismiss Connor for 22, and then himself bowled Harrison next over to change things. Neil then found some length, and bowled the remaining dangerman Ashforth with a corker, and Penicuik were on the ropes. Gair polished off the middle order with a fine, accurate spell of left arm medium pace as Penicuik were all out for 62.

This never looked enough, but Chris Ashforth is a fine fast bowler and caused our batsmen a few problems and probably should have had an even better return than 2-11. Kyle rounded off a fine week for the team carrying his bat for 33. He is now using his craft to score runs quickly, while he strengthens up. Reminds us a lot of Tom Barrett. Zaki found the slow spin of Green to his liking, and scored runs with ease, and we made the target comfortably enough in the end.

The success of this Carlton side over the last 4 years has, for a large part, been built around their impressive pace bowling attack.  So the news that injuries would keep Cameron and Henry from bowling, plus the knowledge that talented young batsman Kyle would miss out due to a school trip to Paris, made for a lot of head scratching from long-suffering coach Alistair Duncan.

The coach’s mood was not helped when a third pace bowler unfortunately called off ill in mid-morning, leaving the side with just 10 players. In addition, the wet conditions robbed the side of the bowling of Grigor as he doesn’t wear spikes. No wonder the coach has no hair left. Under 13 twelfth man David Mitchell was hastily promoted to the Under 15s and the youngster fielded magnificently throughout the day in a display that would have made the Carlton coaching staff proud.

After a loose first over, Neil bowled tightly in tandem with William and ensured that Huntly would not get off to a flyer. Gair also bowled particularly well, conceding just 10 runs from his 4 overs. However, there was a lack of penetration about the Carlton attack that a more experienced side than Huntly would have capitalised on. As it was, a score of 115 for 1 off 20 overs was a stiff enough challenge.

In reply, William and Mo gave Carlton exactly the steady start that they were looking for and although both were out when a  50 could have been on their agenda,  Zaki saw the side home with an over to spare.

In the end the Scottish Cup Final was a game too far for the Carlton youngsters as they were well beaten by a very impressive Poloc outfit. However, the Carlton boys will be kicking themselves that they didn’t give the Glasgow outfit more of a run for their money.

Carlton batted first and got off to the worst possible start when William mistimed a pull and was caught at mid on in the first over. After Grigor was bowled for 6, Mo and Saif batted sensibly and had Carlton in a good position when the skipper missed a pull at a long hop and was plumb lbw. Zaki became another Carlton batsman to perish to a cross batted shot, bringing Angus to the crease to join Mo. A lot hinged on this pair and they proceeded comfortably before Mo was bowled. Henry succumbed to a silly run out and, although Gair batted straight and sensibly he was unlucky to get a leading edge to leave the longer than usual Carlton tail exposed. Within a matter of balls it was all over, leaving Carlton on just 94 and with more than a few batsmen having cause to rue the way in which they got out.

Although all the Carlton attack bowled tidily and the fielding was good, the lack of penetration seen in the semi-final was evident once again and the outcome never seemed in doubt as the talented Poloc openers saw their side home to a comfortable victory.

So, a disappointing result to end the Fifteens’ cup run but a lot to be proud of and a great effort from Carlton to get two sides to a national cup final in the one season.

Match rained off - Carlton won 5-4 on a bowl out

Safe in the knowledge that nothing could compare to last week's nerve wrecking, 4 match crickathon - see above for details if you dare - the Carlton lads found Coach Duncan in a happy, relaxed mood.

I mean, this was despite losing to illness, injury, school cricket tours what most clubs would consider the backbone of a team - Mo, Cameron, Kyle, Steven, Neil & Henry. The more observant readers will have recognised that that sextet included our 4-pronged fast bowling attack. So why the upbeat mood, has he finally cracked? Well, not quite. We still managed to field 7 U15s (Grigor, Zaki, Angus, Iain, Gair, William and captain Saif) plus a pick of Andy's very fine U13s (Rory, Fraser, Craig & Euan). We even had the luxury of a specialist wicket-keeper plus warm weather - give or take the odd shower.

All set then.

With Corstorphine's roof having been loaned out for use at SW17 for the fortnight, a 5 o'clock heavy downpour left the square and outfield saturated. Start put back ½ hour, matters improved remarkably but very likely damage to the square made play impossible. Alternative dates were discussed, but with the holiday period approaching both sides would struggle to field teams in the next fortnight.

"Okay, let's have a bowl out" says Clive (Corstorphine coach), "how many bowlers do you have?". "Eleven" Coach Duncan responded. We settled on 7-a-side, 3 balls each and as Clive let us use the artificial, we set about practice & selection.

Now, Coach Duncan knows a thing or two about bowling (huh?), understanding of the required mental attitude (he's deluded!) and observed the lads in the warm up. So when Saif asked who was bowling, "the 7 U15s" wimped the coach, relieving himself of any decision making whatsoever. He then positioned himself at what he considered the ideal vantage point - about 100 yards away from the square - just in case advice was sought during the fray.

So to the bowl out itself, a bit like a penalty shoot out at football, except no goalkeeper, shoot from the halfway line, with 1 post to aim at!

After 5 bowlers from each side, the team were tied . At 2-2! That's 30 attempts to hit the stumps, 13.33% success rate.

The young 6th bowler from Corstorphine managed to hit twice from his 3 attempts, to go 4-2 up. Oh well, who've we got left to bowl?? Top order batsman and occasional wicket keeper Zaki (who Coach Duncan deemed not good enough to bowl for the team this season), and Iain (just back from 7 weeks off with a hand injury - his right hand). Coach Duncan crosses his fingers as Zaki steps up and bowls the slowest 3 deliveries of the bowl out, hits 3 times and suddenly we have our noses in front for the first time at 5-4. Commiserations to the final Corstorphine bowler who failed to hit in 3 attempts, and Carlton go through to the final of this competition.

Sporting handshakes all round while Coach Duncan congratulates himself on being a tactical genius, and awaits a call from the England set-up.

Opponents still to be decided from the other half of the draw, but we'd reckon on a mid-end August date for what will be the final junior swansong for most of the lads.

Usual to and fro-ing of our lads, as we welcomed back Neil, Mo & Kyle, but made do without William and Angus. Steven and Henry still on holiday, and Cameron was down south on Scotland duty. Grange appeared to be equally under strength, with a couple of lads accompanying Cameron down south. Wicket keeper Craig, Rory and Fraser were our U13s this time around.

Grange chose to bat but struggled to make any progress against the fast bowling of Neil at one end and the accuracy of Mo at the other. First wicket fell to Neil in his 4th over, ending with a commendable 1-8. But it was the change bowler that decimated the Grange innings. Gair bowled his medium paced left arm over, but it was his subtle variations of in-swing, the one that goes on and leg cutters that did for the Grange middle order. 5 wickets for  14 runs. Splendid stuff. However, this wasn’t the whole story, as our lads held some good catches, none more so than young Fraser Allardice. Fraser was a standout in the field, witnessed by his chasing of a fierce blow to the boundary, preventing the 4 and firing in a powerful, accurate throw to bowler Iain for a run out as the 3rd run was attempted. The Grange lads batted deep down the order and some last over blows enabled 80 to be achieved.

With so many lads away, our batting order did not look very lengthy, and with the Cup final escapade still in our minds, openers Kyle and Mo settled in with the prime aim of not giving away a silly wicket. Progress was steady but always up with  the smallish run rate, and we were over halfway to our total when Mo was clean bowled. Grigor arrived and played steadily and, as  Kyle ended a fine innings on 29, Saif joined Grigor. Around 20 still required at 4 an over, with Grange fielders prowling menacingly, but Grigor and Saif merely lifted the ball over the top, and Carlton sailed through to the target with an over and a bit to spare.

This Grange side still contained some excellent, representative players, (and a very ‘experienced’ U15) so this was a fine victory with pride of place to Gair but with superb support from all of the team. Well done lads.

Carlton were delighted to have the opportunity to provide opposition for Pentland in their warm up for the Inter Area tournament the following week. At usual at this time of year, holidays played a factor but 4 of the younger Carlton cricketers made their debut at this level (Keshav, Dougal, Euan, David Loudon) and all played a part. A few of the Carlton lads qualified for both teams, and it was Zaki who was chosen to play against his club on this occasion (joined by Euan & Keshav). Early rain showers restricted the game to 25 overs a side, and it was Carlton who struck early when Fraser enticed Angus Paterson into playing early and Neil bagged his first of 3 catches on the day at mid on.

However, this only brought Zaki to the crease and with Jaz, they set about punishing Carlton's change bowlers with menace, although our lads'  fielding during this period was, ahem, abysmal.  The turning point came when acting captain Mo introduced himself, and with a noticeable change in pace clean bowled Jaz. Zaki went on to complete an excellent half century, before making way for his team mates to gain some batting practice. Angus chipped in with 3 middle order wickets, as Pentland ground their way to 136, a fair total given the lack of batting depth of each side. Although wicketless, Neil impressed immensely with his open spell of fire-power bowling, and debutant Dougal is a fine fielder. No match can be complete without a Fraser assisted run out and he combined with Craig on this occasion.

Signs were ominous for Carlton when Mo went 2nd ball to Chris Ashforth, but Dougal & Grigor put on 98 after a steadfast start. Zaki, in easily his best game of the season, stemmed the run flow, then clean bowled Rory and finally ended Dougal's innings with a c&b. With 6 overs left, the target was 6 an over, but Angus Rive was in determined mood, especially in his running between wickets. Craig & Neil were not on the same wavelength and were run out leaving David Mitchell to come to the crease. A huge 6 off the 2nd last over by Angus, and a neat 2 by David swung the game in favour of Carlton for the 1st time, and Angus completed the chase with a 4 with 5 balls remaining.

To be honest, the result was secondary to the cricket experience afforded to the players on the day. Special mention to Euan (batted well in mid order), Keshav (bowled a promising spell of leg-spin), David Loudon & Rory (both having catches dropped from their medium pace). Pentland were led superbly by Angus Paterson, and their fielding was top drawer, with bowlers Chris & Alastair Napoli catching the eye on this occasion.   Well done to all players on both teams.

*Match played at Grange Loan as Corstorphine square waterlogged

Firstly, thanks to Clive Allan & his team for their willingness to play this match, with a late venue switch. Corstorphine were far from full strength – missing their 3 Scotland players Malik, Kasparek & young Sadler.

Carlton batted first. Mo & Kyle made a steady start against the accurate seam of Meier and Kinghorn, and when Mo fell to a loose shot on  change of bowling, this brought strokemaker Grigor to the crease.  With Kyle playing his way into some form, and Grigor playing the shots, the score crept towards an acceptable 118. Kyle’s latter part of his knock was a delight to see, and he contributed a well constructed 46, only falling near the end. Grigor’s 43 included five 4s on a slow outfield, another fine innings.

Corstorphine had 3 players capable of making 50+ so the match was far from over, but their opener Nicol made a poor judgement in risking a single to Fraser Allardice in the 2nd over. For the 4th consecutive match, he returned the ball over the stumps, Craig this time completing the run out. Steven & Gair were dominant as Carlton’s opening seam attack, and it was the latter who combined with Craig ‘fast hands’ Everett to dismiss Meier, our wickie snapping up a catch while standing up to our bowler. And that was almost it as far as Corstorphine threatened, their fate all but sealed when Kinghorn let a ball from Saif hit every conceivable part of his body before nudging the bails off. The rest of the match belonged to ‘fast hands’, as he showed just how promising a wicketkeeper he has become. He added a stumping off Cheeky, but impressed enormously with leg side takes, and lightening quick stumping ‘shouts’.

The light faded faster than expected, so again thanks to Corstorphine for playing on, unquestioningly.

We’ve ended the league season very satisfactorily , winning all but our close match with Watsonians.

Well done to all who have taken part, and represented Carlton with distinction.
