Carlton headed south to Kelso minus a number of their regular squad – Cheeky was on 1st XI duty, Haris and Ruari with Scotland U15s and Greg and Dougal playing for East. Nevertheless, the side contained a number of the players who had performed so well for the 2s and 3s the days before and confidence was high.
It all started well. Carlton bowled and fielded well to restrict Kelso to 79 with the highlights a great runout by Gair and a brilliant one handed diving catch at long off by Kyle to get rid of top scorer Ian Sims.
The team was hopeful of chasing the total but Matt, Mo, Fraser and Gair scoring 1 run between them was not in the plans. Ali started well but was stumped for 15. Kyle stuck in well and was just edging us there with Paddy but missed one when going down the wicket and was bowled for 21. The chase was left to Angus and Rory but 12 needed off the last 2 overs was too much and the boys ended 3 runs short with a ball to go. The top 4 Kelso bowlers bowled very well and they put in an exceptional performance in the field.
No doubt that the better team won. Carlton tried hard, so no lack of effort can be blamed. Just one of those days.
