Murray Whitaker 50*

A player reports…..

The Carlton boys arrived at SMRH on a cold, wet and windy evening to play probably one of the coldest games of cricket any of them have ever played in their lives, (with exceptions of some games at Peffermill).

After putting on some extra layers and finishing a solid warm up, Murray went out to do the toss. The toss was successful and Murray decided to bat. The batting line-up was looking solid with Muz and Ruairidh opening, Shandy coming in at 3 and Tommy K at 4 and more to come. In saying this, 3 of our top 4 were bowled out for less than ten, due to some tight bowling from SMRH; Murray was the exception who stuck in and played a well-deserved innings and finished on 50* retired. With some lower order big hitting from Mickey B, the Carlton u15s made it to 94.

A quick turnaround occurred, and Carlton were out at the middle ready to field. Skipper Muz threw the ball to Mike for the first over. Some tight bowling shared between Shandy and Mike saw them get 3 wickets between them. Mike and Gregor both showed good skills but had to finish their spells as the ball was then passed to Douglas and Ruairidh who both bowled well but could not make a breakthrough. A partnership was forming between two SMRH boys and the lads were wondering if 94 was enough. Man of the match Murray Whitaker then proceeded to bowl a good spell of 3-15, aided by some good catches from Ruairidh, and ended the threat of the two batsmen who by that time were well in and were seeing it well, so vital wickets. Tom Kujawa claimed he had a sore back, but still managed to clean up the SMRH tail. A good run out taken by big Ben behind (or infront) of the stumps brought Carlton home, and we ran out deserved winners. In the end Carlton won by 17 runs which was perhaps a bit closer than we would have hoped.

Good skills from the lads all round and great fielding from all: only 5 extras conceded and none of them wides (though the cold weather gave the umpires an incentive to keep hands in pockets!). Special mention goes to Murray who played a composed innings and made the vital breakthrough with the ball.

Match conceded to Carlton as MDAFs / Penicuik could only raise 6 players.

To avoid the disappointment the Carlton admin team raised extra players from within the Carlton u 13 ranks and ensured that some cricket took place.

Two roughly equal teams were arranged and a game ensued once Alasdair had ensured the ground had dried out enough, a process aided by the players jumping up and down on towels to soak up excess water from the artificial pitch.

The first team scored 78, with Murray (15), new signing Louis (26), Mikey (9) and Tom (11) scoring the bulk of the runs aided by extras (16) from the visiting bowlers.

The second team (composed of 4 DAFs, 2 Penicuik and 5 Carlton players) batted out their 15 overs for 96 runs 45 of which were contributed by Carlton's Ruairidh (30 retired) and Douglas (15*) who both scored in true T20 fashion with a strike rate of 167% each.

The bowling and fielding was good as we would expect from Carlton, only 6 extras being conceded. New boy, Peter Sawkins looked promising playing in his first hardball game, but like all the bowlers on the slightly moist surface, was unable to unleash his full potential for fear of slipping. We look forward to see what he can do. Pete recovered excellently from a Ruairidh onslaught in his first over to deliver a tight maiden in his second. Scott, Harry, Broy, Archie and Joy all had a run out and bowled two,or three overs each.

All in all it was good to get some cricket and we thank Alasdair for coming up to ensure that the ground was playable. And thanks also to the u13s who stepped in at the last minute to ensure we had two full sides......Pete, Euan, Joy, Scott and Douglas.

The lads arrived at a sunny but chilly Raeburn Place to play Grange in the 3rd game of the season.

The squad warmed up with a cheeky game of one bounce. It's hard to pick a standout performer but Scott the Livingston pro youth player shone through in the end.

Gus won the toss and the lads were told that it was to be batting first for the Carlton squad. Maino and TK Max opened up, unfortunately Ru Main was caught early doors trying to sweep. Tommy K was playing positively and had creamed a six over mid, but sadly next ball he played it on to his own stumps for 16. The less said the better!

Then came to the crease skipper Gus followed by Mikey B. Unfortunately just as Mikey was getting into it and starting to smoke it, he was run out for quick 21. This brought in Pete Gill who was just getting into his stride when he was caught and bowled for 7. Then Benny arrived at the wicket to partner Gus. They finished off the innings solidly, with Ben batting well for his 16* and Angus finishing on 33* having played a patient anchor role. Carlton posted a respectable total of 115.

The boys depadded and returned to the field to defend their total. Mikey B and Peter opened up the bowling. Peter bowled very economically and Mikey was bowling sheer heat. The batsmen were very intimidated by Mikey after a long stare down after EVERY ball.

Harry Simmo (1 for 15) then came on and broke the vital partnership between the Grange openers who by this time were seeing the ball well. Tommy K replaced Mikey at the end of an aggressive spell of 3 overs for 5 runs. Economic bowling from Scott and Tom restricted the batsmen to taking 1s and 2s. Captain Gus and Ruairidh replaced Scott and Tom. Some tight bowling from Angus and good return overs at the end from Mikey saw the Carlton boys to victory as Grange fell 13 runs short of the required total.

All in all, a good performance from the lads. Special mention to Mikey for his terrible chat and congratulations to Patrick, the Grange skipper, for a well earned 50. Great bowling and batting all round and it was a good win.

Ben reports ...

The boys arrived at an even colder Myreside pitch than yesterday's at Portgower for their second game in two days, this time in the ECB Cup. Gus went out to toss on the (very) small pitch and the lads were told it was batting first again.

Maino and TK opened up and looked in fine form with an opening partnership of 76 before TK was bowled for 33. Gus then went in gradually building up momentum and getting a good run rate ticking over whilst Maino was looking in good form smoking 6s like there was no tomorrow. Ruairidh was like a train all innings hitting his first fifty of the season! With Maino finished on 51 retired, Gus (34*) was scoring quickly and with Mikey (20*) doing the same the lads had set a very respectable total of 173 after the 20.

Everyone was eager to get out there and the returning Shandy opened the bowling and managed to get the ball swinging around. He got his man with a nice Yorker in his second over, finishing with very respectable figures of 1/7 off his 3 overs. There were fine bowling spells from Tristan, Ethan, Harry, Broy and Mikey. Harry bowled a beautiful spell snaffling 2/9 off 4 overs. Tristram deserves special mention for his economical spell of 1/3 off 4, including a wicket maiden first up, as does resting wicket keeper turned bowler Finley who delighted everyone with an opening maiden over and figures of 0/2 off 2! Not bad for a wicky!

Watsonian were restricted to 83 for 7 after 20 so a good performance by the lads and through to the next round!!!

Tristram reports ...

SMRH won the toss and decided to put Carlton into bat first, which with an equally strong batting and bowling side we were happy to do. After a flying start by Angus cutting a four off the first ball the tone was set for the match, Tom, looking to be offensive off some good opening bowling, was caught in the covers, which brought Ruairidh to the crease.

He and Angus built solidly rotating the strike well and putting the fielders under pressure before Ruairidh went for 12 to an LBW in the 7th over. As soon as Murray entered, the run rate stepped up a level, both Angus and Murray hitting boundaries every over and bringing the score to 78 when Murray departed for 28 bringing the big hitting Gregor Shand to the crease. Gregor got off the mark straight away giving the strike to Angus who was now in the zone and nearing his fifty which he reached by hitting some brilliant but very un-Angus like sixes! Angus’ 54 included six 4s with two 6s off his last two balls. Meanwhile Gregor was keeping the scoreboard ticking along very nicely himself with an array of fours and a six which brought him to 49 before he was bowled agonisingly one short of his fifty. With two relatively new batsmen at the crease with only a few overs left the run-rate slowed a tad before Mikey Brown was caught and bowled for 2. Gregor M then strode to the crease with two overs looking to finish off well, both he and Ben D did so leaving Carlton on 173 for 6 after 20 overs.

Mikey (1 for 18) and Ethan (2 for 19) opened the bowling tidily, with Mikey striking first with the last ball of his 3 over spell. Ethan then took the wicket of the other opener with a solid catch by Tristram at square leg. Tristram (2 for 15) then came on first change and G-Mac second. In his second over he got their number 4 out with a great catch at mid-on from Scott Peggie. Another wicket fell the next ball from a good catch by Ruairidh bringing up a hat-trick ball on Tristram's penultimate ball which was drilled straight back at him at his head at a rate of knots…Tristram managed to stop the ball but injured his hand in the process. He just about completed his over but was unable to bowl again. It was now over to Scott (2 for 16) to restrain the SMRH big hitting middle order which he did very well with an economical first over and a wicket in both his second and third over. Ruairidh and Ethan tidied up the tail especially Ruairidh who after a wicket maiden first over courtesy of a sharp stumping by Ben finished with figures of 2 for 5 off three overs – the second wicket a good catch behind by Ben. This left SMRH on 104 after 20 overs.

A very comfortable 55 run victory for Carlton with possibly some rather too comfortable fielding. However a mention must be made of a very positive batting performance and a mention too to Scott who took two wickets with the ball and a very good catch. Round 1 of the Scottish Cup negotiated….Round 2 to come.

GMac reports ...

The U15's arrived at an unusually warm and sunny Peffermill to play Arbroath United in the Quarter Finals of the ECB Cup. A win would mean a trip to Finals Day in two weeks’ time. A strong Arbroath side challenged us throughout the first innings but the compact bowling and fielding unit of Carlton restricted Arbroath in the second.

Gav Rittoo set up a good fielding warm up, one of the best so far. The boys executed the drill well and after, sat down for a well deserved rest whilst Beattie looked for the opposition Captain. Beattie eventually found the captain and in true Carlton style, lost the toss.

Arbroath put Carlton in to bat on an artificial wicket which looked good to bat on. Arbroath proved they made the right decision when their opening bowler got a hat-trick and had us 2 for 3 in the first over with the loss of Muz Whit, Ru Main and Shandy. A good recovery by Beattie and Tommy K had us in a reasonably good position after a partnership of 55 but Gus fell in the 11th. GMac and Mikey also trudged back to the pavilion in the 12th. 63 for 4 became 63 for 6. Although he had a new partner almost every over TK was racking up the runs at the other end and advanced to a well deserved 52 retired out. Some good running from Peggs and Benno at the end gave us a good total of 108 for 9 after our twenty......a great recovery from a parlous 4 for 8.

The lads took to the field knowing that we had defended small totals in last year's competition and were well backed up today with a strong bowling unit. Mikey B and GMac opened, bowling good areas, the batsman found runs hard to come and many balls found the edge. After 5 Arbroath were on 16 for 1, Mikey B having removed the highly dangerous Arbroath keeper for a first ball duck.

Some good bowling from Shandy and Tristram also bowled well, good fielding and good keeping from Ben D restricted Arbroath to 43 for 2 off 12. Experienced head Tommy K shone in the limelight, once again, picking up 4 wickets, 3 in one over, including their key batsman. GMac and Murray finished the tail off with one and two wickets respectively, leaving Arbroath 68 all out and Carlton victors by 40 runs.

A good tea was taken after the second innings, supplied by all 11 boys (we mean the parents but we took the credit). Carlton's very own tea critic, Gav Rittoo, enjoyed the variety of sandwiches, cakes and crisps but failed to give a rating.

So off to Finals Day it is for us on the 21st of June. Thanks to Arbroath for a good Quarter Final, which consisted of 9 ducks over both innings. Also thanks to David Main and Gav for taking the team. Well done to Arbroath's opening bowler, who finished with 4 wickets. But the Man of the Match was big Tommy K who not only scored 52 runs but to rub it in finished with 4 wickets.

Penicuik / MDAFs won the toss and elected to bat on Penicuik’s decent pitch. Carlton took regular wickets throughout the innings but failed to remove the MDAFs number 1 who slowly but increasingly surely moved on to his 50 and retirement. With 88 scored off the bat plus 23 extras, the total to beat was 112. The pick of the bowling were the returning G Mac with 3 for 26 off his 4 overs and Gregor Shand with 2 for 11.

Broy and Tristram opened the Carlton batting account but found the opening bowlers hard to get away. When Tristram removed for 6 in the 5th over and number three Ruairidh for 4 in the 6th Carlton were perilously placed on 15 for 2. With the loss of Louis for 3 and Broy for 7 we slumped further to 31 for 4 off 9. Gregor Mac and Ben D then rebuilt just about keeping Carlton in with a chance but the top order had left too much to do. With Gregor out for 34 and Ben for 16 the chase was effectively over and Carlton finished on 95 for 9 some 17 runs adrift.

Truth be told Carlton were outplayed in every department by the Penicuik / MDAF boys who were tighter with the ball, sharper in the field and more careful with the bat. However, despite not playing particularly well and mixing up the batting order to spread experience Carlton still came close to a team that had to play at the top of their game to beat us. Thanks to Penicuik for hosting us and congratulations to the combined Penicuik / MDAFs 11 who ran out worthy winners on the night.

Gus reports ...

The match began with the typical footie warmup, and the typical poor standard of play, the final score being 1-0 to team trousers.

Skipper Gus walked out to toss up on a well used pitch, having been played on twice at the weekend already. He won the toss and decided to bat first, despite having a slightly weakened lineup.

Angus and GMac opened up and began positively, pushing the fielders with quick singles and putting away the bad ball. However Gus was soon caught sweeping the first change legspinner at deep square for 14 to bring Pete to the crease. This was followed by GMac smacking the rest of the over for five consecutive 4s all around the park.

Pete got a good nut and was bowled for a duck, giving way to Mikey, who formed a solid partnership with Gregor. Gmac retired for a classy fifty in the twelfth over with the score on 107. Ruairidh then joined Mikey and they continued to score quickly before Mikey retired on fifty and Ruairidh was caught at deep square for 19. This left Ben, Tristram and Peggy to finish off the innings and take the score to 189, the team's highest score of the season so far.

After a quick turnaround it was up to newly joined Milo to open the bowling with Ethan. However, the Grange captain was intent on chasing down the total that had been set and smashed his way to 25 off three overs. This lead to Mikey being brought on with immediate results. He firstly got one of the openers to nick one behind with a good catch being taken by Ben, and then clean bowled the Grange captain in the same over.

Following the breakthrough Carlton then rotated through their bowlers trying to find more breakthroughs. Archie picked up one wicket, surprising the batsmen with a vicious bouncer that he could only fend off to point. The Grange no. 3 retired for a good 50 and the final wicket of the innings was taken by Ethan.

Grange finished on 160, 30 short of their target. Thanks to them for a good high scoring T20 game and special mention for those who reached fifty.

Ben reports…..

Finals day was an early start and a brief journey across the city to SMRH’s Inverleith Park where this year’s finals day was to be played. All the players started to arrive and get ready for a long day ahead. It was time to get out and warm up…..some readers may note that at U15s the football game is a weekly event; unfortunately there was no game today as I had left the ball in the back of the car which left the boys disappointed. We did some handball with a cricket ball and it ended up being an exciting game with it ending 3-1 to the shorts, then it was time for our first game against Huntly CC. See previous report. After the win it was time for some tea before the final against Grange. The teas were a fantastic selection of hot food - a tea up there at Grange Loan standards.

We set out for a toss against Grange hoping to re-enact the win of last year’s final. Gus tossed up and lost: we were to bat first again. Beattie and Murray opened up with some great first spells by the Grange bowlers restricting Carlton’s run rate. As Muz pushed a quick single behind the keeper the ball was picked up by the Grange keeper and thrown at the stumps and given out!! Not the start the boys had hoped for and Gus was out without facing a ball.

Ru Main was in at number 3 and a steady start for the big hitter - he was playing well and hitting the singles and gaps which helped him and Muz develop a great partnership. As Muz tried to push the run rate in true Murray style he skied a ball from the Grange bowler and was taken at point for 8 and the boys were two down! Tommy K was in at 4 and got off to a good looking start before he was stumped off the Grange spinner for 1 and Carlton were 3 down. At 23 for 3 in the 6th over the boys were in trouble.

G Mac was now in and he and Ru Main rebuilt and upped the run rate just as required. Ru Main hit a huge six over mid-on prompting Fraggle to comment "Even I couldn't hit it that far". G Mac and Ruairidh seemed to be putting a healthy total on the board which was a huge relief after the situation at the early overs. G Mac was caught at point and he finished on a healthy 38, which was well deserved in his partnership of 68 with Ruairidh who was out caught in the next over for 46. Shandy (1) and Mikey (6) were next in but Gregor was run out in a traditional run out muck up. I was in and finished with a couple of singles and our innings finished on 110 for 7 after the 20 overs.

We were in to bowl and Mikey (2 for 8) opened up with the first ball a single to point. The second was a spectacular ball that pitched outside off and swung crashing into top of off and dismissed the Grange opener - a brilliant start to our bowling. At the other end Gregor opened up and bowled a tight spell finishing with figures of 1 for 22.

We continued to bowl good areas which were restricting Grange. Angus also bowled very well swinging the ball away finishing with figures of 3 for 11, with one lbw, one caught behind and one bowled. Murray also bowled well ending with economical figures of 1 for 15.

However, it was the wicket of Hay-Smith on 34 , bowled by Tommy K, that really killed the Grange innings as he was the only batsman who had got into our bowling. After that Grange finished on 89 all out in the final over with GMac taking the last wicket and finishing with 1 for 22 off 3.3 overs.

A great day for the U15s to win the ECB Cup by 21 runs and very proud of the overall team effort….Hopefully looking for the Scottish Cup now!!

Carlton won the toss and decided to bat on the astro at GL against watsonians on a Wednesday night. Murray and Angus opened the batting but after a bright start Murray departed for 18. Tom came in at 3 but went after hitting a couple of fours for 15, this meant Reid had 2 wickets in his first spell. Ru Main (53*) and Beattie (40*) retired after great knocks from the both of them. Mikes (6) and Shandy (7) came and went with both of them falling for less than ten. Ben (14), Archie (1) and Tristram (12) came in at 7,8 and 9 and all got run out. Pete (1) and Broy (4) remained at the crease to complete the 20 overs. Carlton finished on 191 for 7.

Mad fish Mikes and Pete Gill opened the bowling and Pete got the wicket of Matty B in his opening spell. The first change bowlers were Archie and Broy. They bowled well and Archie got the wicket of their number 5. Muz and Tristram came on and bowled well for no wicket. Ruairidh and Angus finished it off with Angus getting 2 wickets. Run outs were a theme throughout the day with 4 of the Watsonian batsmen being run out as well as the 3 run outs in the Carlton innings. Their number 3, Kinloch, batted well for his 48 not out. Watsonian finished on 116 for 9 meaning Carlton won the game by 75 runs.

Captain Beattie won the toss and made the positive move of having a bat on another high quality Grange Loan wicket.

Angus and Murray opened the batting with Angus (below) making some lusty blows over mid-wicket along with some elegant cover drives. The partnership was broken on 46 with Murray being trapped in front for 16 in the 11th over; a few less than we would liked to have been on but plenty of wickets in hand to launch an attack for the last 9 overs.

Unfortunately no-one managed to support Angus and make a meaningful contribution in the closing overs. Credit must go to the Carlisle bowling attack which had no weak links; their seamers bowled with good pace and had good control over their line and we also came up against a very consistent leg spinner. Wickets fell regularly mainly with the Carlton middle order trying to play attacking shots over the top where rotating the strike with quick singles would have been a better option to keep the scoreboard ticking over. We stumbled to 85 for 9 in our allotted 20 overs knowing that we were under par but in with a fighting chance.

The half time talk and attitude from the Carlton players was very positive as we knew all the pressure was on our opposition to get the runs. Mikey and Saif opened the bowling with Mikey getting the early breakthrough we were looking for; a fine delivery hitting the top of off (below). This brought to the crease their 'big gun' who from ball one played his shots and took the game away from us in the space of a few overs with a quick fire 45. Angus gave us hope with a double breakthrough in the 11th over bringing 2 new men to the crease.

However, with only 11 required at that stage it was too little too late; our visitors passed our total easily in the 13th over for the loss of just 3 wickets. An extra 20 runs on our total could have made things very interesting!

At the end of the day we were outplayed in all 3 departments and it highlighted to our players that there is much work to do to improve as all round cricketers. The boys will learn from the experience and must remember that rotating the strike in T20 cricket is crucial to getting a match winning total. Our opposition showed us that consistency with the ball brings wickets as most of our dismissals were through false shots rather than spectacular bowling.

Thanks to all the parents for their hard work with scoring, catering and supporting!

Angus won the toss and decided to bat on what looked like a good pitch, though a touch slow after the recent wet weather.

Angus and Murray opened and Angus looked to be positive again following his excellent innings against Carlisle CC by using his feet from the start against the opening spin attack. Unfortunately he was caught at mid off trying to clear the outfield. A disappointed Angus trudged off but he still had a major role to play come the second half of the match. Ruairidh joined Murray and fought hard to see off the impressive Blain who bowled with pace and accuracy. Unfortunately Ruairidh fell LBW to a good delivery from Blain and Carlton were on the back foot at 9-2 after 3 overs. Murray and Tom then put together a good partnership with Murray in particular taking the fight to the bowlers with positive stroke play and some lovely offside drives. Unfortunately Murray did not quite manage to see off the dangerous Blain being caught at cover in his last over for a hard fought 22. The game was now in the balance with Carlton 32-3 from 7.3 overs.

Young Gregor strode to the wicket and was positive from the start playing a lovely on drive for 4 to get off the mark and show his intent. With young Blain off with impressive figures of 2 wickets for 4 runs from his 4 over spell Tom and G Mac looked to put pressure on the change bowlers by punishing bad balls and importantly running well for quick singles. They did a great job of upping the scoring rate without taking too many chances, a difficult balance to get right with 3 main batters already back in the pavilion before the half way stage. Tom and GMac put on exactly 50 in just over 9 overs taking the score to 82 before Gregor was out for an excellent 25 from 23 balls. Very mature batting from one so young.  Mickey joined Tom and Tom grabbed the game with some clean hitting scoring 10 off 4 balls to take the score to 92 in the 17th over before being bowled for an excellently compiled 30. Ben and Mickey then batted out the last 3 overs taking the final score to what would be a competitive 107 – 5 if Carlton bowled accurately and fielded well.

Mickey and Saif opened the bowling against the promising Davidson and Ritchie. The scoring rate was steady as the batsmen attuned themselves to the wicket though the bowlers could have attacked the stumps a bit more in those first few overs. However as soon as Mickey hit the right length and line he was rewarded with the wicket of Davidson, bowled by a good one that nipped back. After 5 overs Angus brought himself on and immediately got movement in the air and off the wicket and bowled the dangerous Ritchie with another delivery that nipped back. Grange were 21-2 from 6 overs and beginning to fall behind the required run rate. However captain Haysmith and Blain repaired the damage taking the score to 50 before Blain was bowled by another good delivery from G Mac.

Haysmith was batting and running well but was steadily losing batters at the other end through good bowling by Murray and Angus and a run out as the required run rate climbed. Haysmith had manufactured the strike well in scored an excellent 35 and brought Grange right back into the game before he was bowled by another superb delivery from the returning Captain Angus. With 19 needed from the last two overs Saif and Angus kept cool heads and Carlton ended up winning by 9 runs. Angus ending up with 4 wickets for 16 runs. The fielding had held up well with Tom saving lots of runs patrolling the boundary, Pete taking a good catch and Archie ensuring they never took two to him down at third man fine leg throughout the innings. It was a good close contest with some excellent cricket played by both teams

Cricket week at Carlton got off to a fantastic start with a great game of cricket between the u15s and an East Invitational u15 side. The rain of the previous couple of days had given way to glorious sunshine and Grange Loan had never looked better, Russell had prepared a superb batting strip and it was game on.

Angus won the toss and put East in to bat. Brian and Haysmith opened for East and got them off to a rollicking start as the Carlton bowlers struggled at first to find line and length. After 5 overs they had proceeded briskly to 40 for no loss. The rate slowed with the introduction of Murray’s off-spin and as Saif found a better length coming round the wicket. After 10 East were 50 for 2 as Saif and Murray conspired to take catches off each other’s bowling.

With Brian (19) and Ritchie (1) gone Haysmith and Rutherford dug in and composed a fine partnership of 58. Carlton’s Murray, Archie and Angus all bowled economically but it was the introduction of Harry that brought the breakthrough as he had Rutherford caught by Milo. 109 for 3 after 26. The next breakthrough came when Angus brought himself back on to remove Haysmith, well taken by Ben behind the stumps for an excellent 64….. 146 for 4 after 33.

Hughes was the next to fall, Milo having him caught by Archie as the East batsmen tried to up the rate in the last few overs. Tom then removed Paterson with an excellent runout from square leg with only a single stump to aim at…top fielding. When Broy had Young caught first ball by Ruairidh, East were 175 for 7 after the 38th. However East had depth in batting and Godfrey- Faussett made the most of being dropped on 19 to hit a 4 and a 6 before being caught second time by Ruairidh attempting another big hit…Broy strikes again. Picken and Ali closed the East innings on a hefty 199 for 8 leaving Carlton the target of a round 200 for victory.

Carlton would have to bat well if they were to have a chance to chase down the East total. A rate of 5 an over would not be too much in a T20 game but the question here was whether the lads could sustain that run rate for 40 overs whilst protecting their wickets. Ruairidh and Murray opened and looked untroubled as they built a solid partnership of 61 and were just beginning to see the ball well and accelerate the scoring when Ruairidh surprised everyone by chipping a ball up to mid-wicket where he was duly caught by Ritchie. A soft dismissal....61 for 1 in the 12th.

This slowed the run rate down and Murray, who had just begun to score freely, went into his shell, batting sensibly with Tom, both biding their time and seeing off the increasingly accurate and turning deliveries of Hawthorn and Tressider’s seam. Both batsmen however continued to run well and pick off the singles, dispatching the odd bad ball and kept the score pretty much on a par with East. A great partnership of 88 developed over 22 overs until Haysmith came back for a second spell and dismissed both batsmen in the same over. This was a match changing moment as two set batsmen were removed just when we needed to push on convincingly and seemed to have the resources to do so.

Despite Angus' best efforts the required run-rate crept up in the final overs though the game was by no means up with 48 required off the last 36 deliveries. However, with boundaries in short supply throughout the game Carlton were now very much on the back foot. Angus did well to keep us just in touch with some great support in running between the wickets from first Harry, then Ben and lastly Archie. This put the pressure back on East who were forced into a few fielding errors that yielded overthrow runs. However, with big boundaries all around there were few fours to boost the home side's chase. 22 required off 12 deliveries became 15 required off 6. With the last over yielding 7 runs East ran out worthy winners by 8 runs.

Long before the game reached its end parents, coaches and other observers were commenting what a great game of cricket this was...and they were right. Either side could have won right into the last over, but East held their collective nerve to clinch a win in an exciting and entertaining game. From a Carlton perspective it was great to see all the top 4 batsmen scoring runs, and participating in well-paced and lengthy innings showing that they had learnt the lessons from the previous week's tour down south about batting time, being patient, building an innings and combining in partnerships. In the final analysis East had a bit more depth in batting that allowed them to accelerate well in their final few overs and that was the difference between the two sides.

Many thanks to everyone involved in the day.....Russell for preparing a great strip; Alison, Kerry, and Amelia for organising the teas; and Gavin for coaching. We are particularly grateful to Bill Polson and Gordon Allan of East for agreeing to the fixture and arranging a team without a lot of notice and to the East lads for playing a good game in the right spirit which they deservedly won.
