67 for 9

Louie Gardiner 3 for 10, Helen Blair 2 for 3, Katie McGill 2 for 13

The Carlton women continued the club's winning weekend with a victory against Glasgow Accies on Sunday.

Carlton, who won the toss, decided to put the away side into bat first. Strong opening spells from Blair and McGill, who claimed 2 early wickets each, proved crucial in the attack. Solid fielding performances from the team forced the away side to work for their runs, resulting in McGill (right) and Cartwright taking key close catches. The depth in the bowling saw Jenner, Gardiner and Thomson all claim several wickets leaving Glasgow Accies 67-9 off their 20 overs.

The Carlton women then chased down the away sides total with relative ease. A promising opening partnership from McGill (33) and Gardiner, who saw off the opening bowlers, was unfortunately broken when Gardiner was caught out.

Blair then joined McGill at the crease only to be run out several overs later by a direct hit from a fielder. Heathcote, Cartwright and Jenner all contributed to the run chase that was achieved in the 14th over.

The victory in the first women’s game of the season (and their first victory ever) signifies the progress that has been made by the women over the winter, showing promising signs of things to come.

The Carlton women’s next fixture is Stirling away on Sunday 19th May where the women hope to emulate their success.

153 for 7

Lily Cartwright 2 for 26, G Cooper 2 for 33

Carlton women continued their league campaign at a sun-kissed Grange Loan on Sunday. With a few regulars away at the regional match and the captain somewhere in Eastern Europe, it was set to be a tough game against a strong Watsonians.

Carlton stand-in captain Lily Cartwright lost the toss (continuing Helen's legendary coin tossing skills), however Watsonians elected to bat, a decision the Carlton team were happy with.

Watsonians started strongly against the Carlton opening bowlers, Thomson and Cartwright. A few boundaries and 3s later, Watsonians were 41 for no loss off the first 5 overs. Cartwright's notorious 2 and a half bounce ball struck in the 6th over, bowling Watsonians' opening bat out for 18. The two Watsonians left at the crease settled in and despite some strong fielding from Carlton they continued to rack up the runs. A run out from Hiley finally broke the partnership with Watsonians number 2 departing for 59. With the two danger batsmen out, Carlton set about limiting the run rate. Cooper came on to bowl and struck with 2 wickets in her first over - one a fantastic catch from Hiley and the other straight on to middle stump. Hiley opened her spell from the other end and produced figures of 1-5 off 6 overs. Cartwright and Thomson came back on for the last few overs, both taking a wicket each. The strong bowling and fielding from Carlton restricted Watsonians to 153-7 off their 30 overs.

After a splendid tea (cementing Carlton's title of "Best Teas in the Scottish League"), Helen Hiley and Louie Gardiner set out to chase down the runs. Their opening partnership of 40 was a great start, ending with Louie being bowled for 22. Hiley produced an outstanding innings, supported at the other end by Scully, Lepere and Thomson. A few good partnerships gave Carlton some much needed runs but with 44 runs needed off the last 4 overs it was looking an impossible task. However Hiley hit 5 fours and with Cartwright running singles at the other end, keeping Hiley on strike, things were looking up. It wasn't quite enough in the end with Carlton finishing 13 runs short of the target. Hiley finished on 78*, the highest individual score for the Carlton women's team yet.

Despite the loss, there are a lot of positives to take from the game. It was the highest run chase made yet by the Carlton women, showing the development of their batting over the winter and into summer training, all good things to take into the first round of the Cup against Kinross.

146 for 5

Jenny Nobes 79*

home 45 all out

Having had cancellations in weeks previous, the Carlton women were raring to get back on the Grange Loan turf and put in some solid performances.

With a captain back from her Eastern European wanderings, losing the toss was inevitable and the home side were made to bat first. The women got off to a shaky start with Wildcat White taking the wicket of Hiley in the first ball of the game. In came Blair (6) to join Willis (13) but was soon sent back to the pavilion making way for batsman number 4, Jenny Nobes. All rounder Nobes saw off the St Boswells bowling with ease. Nobes was supported by Evans (7), Jenner (7) and Cartwright (12) who all chipped in with crucial runs. Nobes looked relaxed at the crease, and it was her attacking cricket that knocked Hiley off the Carlton women’s batting top spot scoring an impressive 79*. The women finished on a respectable 146-5 off their allotted 30 overs

Having posted a solid total, the women then sought to restrict a weakened St Boswells side. Economical bowling from Willis at one end put pressure on the openers while Blair claimed 2 early wickets from the other end leaving St Boswells 9-2. Tight off side sweeping from Beattie and Nicolson ensured that Boswells had to work for their runs.

A brief torrential downpour meant play was stopped allowing a confident Carlton side to regroup. Having already posted 79* on the board, all-rounder Nobes was brought on to bowl which put the final nail in the coffin for Boswells. Her playful spin posed a threat to the batsmen, claiming the crucial wicket of White with a nick taken by keeper Evans. Nobes further confirmed her place as man of the match by taking another 3 wickets in her final 2 overs.

A wicket clean bowled by Jenner secured victory for Carlton women, who bowled St Boswells out for 45.

Willis 6-1-15-1

Blair 4-2-7-2

Hiley 4-2-9-0

Nobes 3-1-9-4

Jenner 1-0-4-1

Having set their sights on some silverware, the Carlton women’s team set off to a blustery Ayr with victory in their sight.

Drawn against a strong St Boswells in the semi-final was always going to be a difficult first match. Losing the toss, the Carlton side were put into bat first with Evans and McGill taking to the crease. The opening pair set out with vigour in the first few overs seeing off the opening attack with ease. With such limited overs (15 over games), the women had no choice but to ‘hit out or get out’ which was unfortunately the case for Evans (3) when she was caught behind. This however paved the way for Willis who brought a certain gung-ho approach to the crease, hitting 4’s aplenty. Despite the strong start, McGill fell victim to another caught behind by Jack. With runs on the board and the overs quickly ticking by the women needed to up the run rate to secure a strong total to defend. The partnership between Willis and incoming batter Gardiner became a crucial one for the team with the pair working the gaps and really challenging the St Boswells' field. The pair’s 40 run partnership was broken with Willis being run out on 30. It was then Blair’s turn to take the crease and it appeared she took her own advice of ‘hit out or get out’ a bit too literally. Golden duck. In came Gibbon to see off the remaining overs with the team finishing on a defendable 74-5 off their 15 overs.

The women then took to the field with Blair and Thomson opening the bowling. A strong start from the bowling attack, with some impressive bowling from youngster Thomson, forced the St Boswells openers to play outside their comfort zone in order to chase the total down. On came McGill and Willis in search of a break through. And McGill, hungry for wickets, ran out White on 32 providing Carlton with a game changing break through. Some tight bowling from Willis at the other end applied the necessary pressure Carlton needed. With St Boswells on track and only 2 wickets down, duo Steindl and Heathcote were brought on to work their magic. Some unbelievable bowling from the pair at such a crucial point in the game left the St Boswells batters unable to score off them in the remaining overs resulting in a Carlton win by 16 runs. And with Glasgow Accies ladies beating Galloway in the other semi-final it meant Carlton women were to play a strong Glasgow team in the final.

49 for 6 (15 overs)

Caitlin Heathcote 3 for 0, Lisa Thomson 1 for 4, Katie McGill 1 for 5

Losing the toss (again), the Carlton side were put into bat, with McGill and Evans taking the crease again. The promising start created by the pair was cut short when McGill (4) was clean bowled by Iram. Willis (2) was then called to the crease , however only for a short time, as she was bowled, leaving Carlton women 11-2. Evans (8) who had been holding up the other end was then a victim of a slower ball, and she too was clean bowled.

With fears of a collapse in sight, Gardener and Blair took it upon themselves to take action and stabilise the run rate. This was short lived, with Blair and Gardener being sent back to the pavilion in quick succession. With the incoming batsmen a bag of nerves, it was now the turn of Steindl and Heathcote to turn this collapse around. Some impressive batting from the two youngsters, Steindl (15*)hitting 4’s with ease and Heathcote’s (6*) speed between the wickets, left us oldies aghast. The duo, who rarely bat together, (not that you could tell) put on some much needed runs for the Carlton women’s side, bringing us back from the brink, and leaving us with a face-saving 65-6 off their allotted 15 overs.

With a batting innings that shook the nerves of the Carlton women, they took to the field with fire in their bellies. McGill, keen for revenge, caught and bowled Glasgow’s opening batter in her 2nd ball. With the pressure on the Glasgow side, Carlton women maintained their composure, with some solid fielding forcing Glasgow to take risks. On came Thomson and Steindl and after impressive performances in the semi-final they didn’t let the pressure of Abtaha’s hitting out get to them and bowled some solid lines which resulted in Thomson taking a wicket. In the crucial final overs Blair brought on herself and Heathcote, with Blair forcing the Glasgow batsman to take risky runs which brought a run out. With the prize wicket of Abtaha still in play and Glasgow still on track to hit the winning runs, Heathcote was tossed the ball in the 14th over to work her magic. Ball 1: Wicket! The much sought after wicket of Abtaha was taken- clean bowled! Ball 2: Wicket! The new batter just couldn’t handle the spin. Ball 3: Dot ball, Heathcote narrowly misses a hatrick at the team hold their breath watching to see if the ball will play on. Ball 4: Dot ball. The team wait with baited breath to see what will happen next. Ball 5: Wicket! Ball 6: dot ball. A game changing triple wicket maiden by Heathcote left Glasgow Accies unable to score the winning runs.

CARLTON WOMEN WIN THE SCOTTISH CUP FINAL!

Amazing contributions by all the women with both bat and ball led to the women winning the Scottish Cup final. The hard work and dedication of every team member undoubtedly lead us to this position, with special thanks to Kyle Stirling and Leigh Kasperek who have helped with coaching this year.
