90 all out (20 overs)

Dylan 32 ret, Fabian 13

home

91 for 3 (15.3 overs)

Akilan 1 for 3

In our first game since the winter break we probably thought it would be cold, but no-one expected that it would actually snow!

Put into bat, our openers Fabian and Cameron K defended well for the first few overs, but then the Grange leg spinner found his range and took three wickets in the fourth over: Cameron feathered an edge to the keeper, Robbie played around his first ball and was bowled, and then Jamie survived the hat-trick ball only to be undone by one which pitched by his feet and turned to hit leg stump.

From 15-3, Fabian and Dylan went about rebuilding the innings. Both batsmen were playing straight & sensibly, putting on a partnership of 15 until Fabian unluckily played on for 18. Dylan then stepped up a gear, smashing seven fours in an unbeaten 32 rtd. After a couple of further wickets, Finn and Euan K managed a late stand before the wickets of Connor and Nate fell to leave the score of 90.

Putting on every stich of clothing, Carlton took to the field. Strong bowling from Cameron, Fabian, Akilan and Dylan gave us a good start, with one sharp runout and a lovely delivery from Akilan hitting the top of off stump. However the Grange batsmen were finding the boundary with increasing regularity, which was only slowed when Finn enticed the batsman to hit a skyer which Fabian did well to catch with frozen hands. Overs from Jamie (retired hurt), Euan, Connor and Cameron G at the end completed the innings.

Firstly, everyone did really well to keep concentration levels up – we will rarely play again on such a cold evening. Against good bowlers we need to defend and play straight, and then wait for the bad ball to come. Good running between the wickets is based on clear calling – at a volume that can be heard at the other end, or even in Morningside! We also learnt that accurate bowling can make a big difference – both sides scored over 25 in extras.

So a few things to think about at training and in your own practice in the nets. Hopefully spring will have come by next Monday.

79 for 8
Murray 2-5, Cameron G 1-5

80 for 1

Robbie 28*, Cameron K 20, Murray 16*

A measured display of bowling and batting ensured that the Carlton Stars won convincingly at a cold and squally Myreside.

With captain Cameron K electing to bowl, controlled overs from Murray 1-4, Cameron K 1-19, Connor 0-4, Jamie 0-5 and Dylan 0-6 set a solid foundation. Three wickets fell with the score on 17: two catches from Cameron K – one off Muz and one off his own bowling and a sharp run out. Further wickets fell - an accurate pair of overs from Cameron G 1-5 was capped with a wicket lbw, and a further run out brought Watsonians to 47 for 5 before a cloudburst of horizontal sleet had players and spectators running to the safety of the new pavilion.

Resuming after the break Akilan and Fin kept on the pressure, with Fin taking one wicket bowled, and Stefan another to a fine catch from Jamie. Final overs from Cameron & Murray wrapped up the innings at 79, with Muz finishing on an impressive 2-5.

The Stars innings was built on an excellent opening partnership of 52 between Robbie & Cameron. Overcoming early communication issues, both batsmen played excellently, running 1s and 2s with confidence and keeping the scoreboard ticking over without the need for flamboyant shots. After Cameron played on for 20, Murray joined Robbie and accelerating the scoring they eased to 80 after 13.2 overs.

Many thanks to Watsonians who played the game in good spirit, and who agreed to play out the remaining overs to give some batting practice to Dylan, Fin, Cameron G and Akilan.

This was a really good team performance, achieved without heroics and with some very sensible batting. The only disappointing part of the game was the 33 extras we conceded (14w, 7nb, 12b) – over a third of the Watsonians total and an extra 21 balls or 3½ overs out in the cold!

Everyone should take some confidence from a positive performance at Grange Loan this week. Yes, we lost the game … but we again showed that we can bowl tightly in spells and that individual batsmen can score the 20-30 runs we need to win.  We just need to put it all together in one game!

Electing to field, the first four Stars bowlers completed some tight spells, and with Cameron K taking two wickets in his first over, we restricted Grange to 38-2 off the first 8 overs.  However, two strong batsmen took advantage of the looser deliveries and despite a wicket for Connor (Fabian catching a skyed leading edge), a total of 128-3 (28 extras) was perhaps 20-30 runs too high.

We lost openers Robbie and Fabian early, both caught behind playing the same cut shot against the Grange off-spinner. Muz and Dylan put pressure on the fielders with some hard running and we were 35-2 after 8, not far behind Grange at the same score.  Unfortunately we then got a bit carried away with quick singles and first Dylan then Muz fell attempting runs that weren’t really there. A lively partnership of 20 between Muz and Cameron K had pushed us along, but we then lost several wickets in succession and fell 28 runs short.

123 all out

Dylan 33 ret, Cameron K 32 ret, Murray 27

A strong batting performance followed by a whole team effort in the field set the stage for an exciting match in sultry conditions at Portgower Place which Carlton won by 10 runs, taking all 10 Grange wickets in the process.

It really was a team effort, with everyone supporting each other in the field and some super stops. Ten bowlers bowling 2 overs apiece, with wickets for Murray (2-12), Akilan (2-16), Finn (1-12), Dylan (1-5), Cameron G (1-14), Cameron C (1-6) and two run outs. A last wicket stand of 48 from two returning batsmen built a bit of tension at the end, Guy and Cameron K bravely bowled at the death, but with 13 required off the final over we restricted Grange to 3 runs before taking the tenth wicket with the penultimate ball.

The earlier batting was impressive. Despite losing skipper Fabian early in the innings, opener Murray built partnerships with Cameron K then Dylan, each retiring, before being run out himself for 27. With a short boundaries on offer, all three batsmen mixed ones, twos and fours to build their innings nicely. Then Jamie was surprised by an offspinner that turned more than most, Cameron G was bowled, and Nate and Akilan saw out the innings at the end.

Pleasingly we only conceded 4 wides and 10 no balls, and without a couple of fielding mishaps we could have kept extras down to less than 20. Well done everyone – a good performance all round.
