The opening game of the season saw Carlton 3’s travel to Haddington on a day made for shorts and flip flops. With a young but talented side out we were confident that a positive result could be achieved. After losing the toss, Carlton batted first but soon found going tough on a slow pitch. The Haddington opening pair of Hiley and Elworthy bowled a tight line restricting the run rate and were rewarded with the two quick wickets of Chris and Ollie. At the other end Feds was playing well holding the innings together and had now been joined by Murray Whittaker, who played some great cricket shots before gambling on a tight run which saw him ran out. This brought Dilip to the crease and he and Feds began building a partnership which the team really needed. Feds had built up a score of 28 before being bowled by a beauty of a ball according to the captain himself! Wickets began to fall quickly with Calum and Shuaib being caught trying to up the run rate but this brought Ruairidh “Dilshan” Main to the crease. With the return of the opening bowlers and a willingness to try and bounce Ruairidh, he decided to take the game to Haddington scoring a vital 22 including a shot over his head! The innings closed with Carlton making 101 all out, a total that we felt could have been defended on the surface.

Carlton took to the field with Calum Everett and Angus Beattie taking the new ball. The boys showed excellent control, a great sign for things to come. Calum took the first wicket with a superb ball that took the edge of the bat allowing Shuaib to take a smart catch behind the stumps. Angus bowled 4 tight overs before being replaced by Maxwell Farrer. His first over saw the wicket of Haddington’s dangerous opener with a good catch on the boundary. This unfortunately brought Kumar to the crease who took a fancy to the spin options in the team hitting his way to 31. However, the introduction of Feds and Ollie again slowed the run rate down with Ollie removing Kumar with another catch on the midwicket boundary. The Haddington middle order then showed great composure in taking their team towards the target which was achieved in the 29th over. Special mention must go to Calum Everett for his bowling figures of 9 overs 2 – 20 and to Angus Beattie for his 7 overs 1 – 18. It proved not to be the result that we would have liked, however, there were some great performances that bode well for the coming season. Thanks very much to Haddington for the game and we look forward to playing later in the season.
